What a lure does and how the mechanic works

Every body of water is tuned for a certain Fishing skill. If your total skill is below it, part of your casts end with the message that your fish got away, and your time at the water is wasted. Total skill is your base profession skill plus the bonus from your pole, gear and lure. That makes a lure the fastest way to temporarily reach a harder zone without waiting for new tackle from the fishing poles hub.

You use the lure from your bags and apply it to your equipped pole. It is a temporary weapon enhancement, so only one lure is active at a time: a new one replaces the old. The lure bonus does stack with your pole and with items from the fishing gear page.

How to get lures

Shiny Bauble — fishing supply vendors and many trade goods vendors, 50 copper. No requirements.
Nightcrawlers — the same vendors for 1 silver. They also drop from undead, for example in Duskwood.
Aquadynamic Fish Lens — only from the Alliance quest Electropellers: Wizbang Cranktoggle in Auberdine wants 12 Electropellers fished from the waters of Darkshore and gives 20 lenses.
Bright Baubles — fishing supply vendors for 2 silver 50 copper.
Flesh Eating Worm — not sold by vendors, drops from Rotted Ones in Duskwood.
Aquadynamic Fish Attractor — an Engineering recipe from trainers, orange at skill 150: 2 Bronze Bars, Nightcrawlers and Coarse Blasting Powder make 3 attractors at once. More about the profession in the engineering guide. Some vendors also sell the attractor in limited supply.

Fishing supply vendors stand in every capital and near most large bodies of water, usually next to the fishing trainer. Verified examples: Catherine Leland in Stormwind, Tansy Puddlefizz in Ironforge, Shankys in Orgrimmar, Lizbeth Cromwell in the Undercity and Sewa Mistrunner in Thunder Bluff. Buy Shiny Baubles and Nightcrawlers by the stack early on: below skill 100 they are enough and cost pennies.
At skill 100 switch to Bright Baubles — the most cost-effective option that vendors always have in stock.
Save Aquadynamic Fish Attractors for short bursts: the fishing tournament, fishing at fishing pools and hauling up fishing treasure, where every minute counts.
Engineers should craft attractors themselves: one set of materials yields three.
Before the Stranglethorn fishing tournament stock up on lures in advance; Booty Bay gets crowded at that hour.

How long does a lure last?

Almost every lure lasts 10 minutes. The exception is the Aquadynamic Fish Attractor, which lasts 5 minutes.

Can I use two lures at once?

No. A lure is applied to the pole as a temporary enhancement, and a new one simply replaces the old one. The lure bonus only stacks with your pole and gear bonuses.

Is the Shiny Bauble worth buying?
