Fishing treasure is a pleasant bonus of fishing in WoW Vanilla 1.12.1: besides fish, your pole can pull up trunks with cloth, leather, potions and even green items. On the WoW x5 server, hunting floating wreckage combines well with levelling fishing and supplies tailors, leatherworkers and engineers.

What you can catch besides fish

Treasure from the water falls into three groups.

Trunks from wreckage. In patch 1.9, together with fish pools, patches of Floating Debris and Floating Wreckage were added. According to the 1.12 database about 60% of their catch is a trunk, and the rest is Stranglekelp and Rumsey Rum, which raises stamina for 15 minutes. These trunks are not locked.
Locked chests. Occasionally fished from open water. They can only be opened with Lockpicking.
Bloated fish. Bloated Redgill, Bloated Mightfish and their relatives open with a right click; inside is usually a gem and occasionally a green ring or necklace.

Low-level waters also give simple unlocked chests and Venture Company crates with engineering parts.

How to farm trunks: step by step

Prepare a pole and a lure — the choice is covered in our fishing poles hub.
Pick a coast by level: the higher the zone, the more valuable the trunk.
Look for a circle of bobbing crates and planks on the water — that is wreckage.
Cast so the bobber lands inside the circle; if you miss, recast.
After a few successful casts the wreckage disappears; walk along the shore to the next one while fishing fish pools on the way.

The same trunks also show up occasionally (about 5%) in the fish pools of the matching zone.

What is inside

Contents scale with the trunk tier. A Tightly Sealed Trunk holds linen and wool cloth, light and medium leather, minor healing and mana potions. A Watertight Trunk gives wool, silk, medium and heavy leather. An Iron Bound Trunk gives silk, mageweave, heavy and thick leather plus healing and mana potions. A Mithril Bound Trunk gives mageweave and runecloth, thick and rugged leather, superior healing and greater mana potions, and with a small chance a bag, a gem, a green item or a rare recipe.

Locked chests have similar contents: cloth, leather, grey and white armour of the zone level and occasionally a green item.

Tips

Combine with pools. Wreckage spawns next to fish pools — one route along the coast brings both fish and trunks.
Cloth for tailors, leather for leatherworkers. The loot covers the needs of tailoring without dungeon runs.
The best wreckage is off the coasts of Tanaris, Feralas and Azshara: that is where Mithril Bound Trunks drop.
Mind the rum. Rumsey Rum gets you drunk — do not drink it right before a fight.

What is Floating Wreckage?

It is a fishing spot shaped as a circle of crates and planks on the water. If your bobber lands inside, you usually pull out a trunk that opens with a right click. The trunk type depends on the zone level.

Do trunks from wreckage need lockpicking?

No. Tightly Sealed, Watertight, Iron Bound and Mithril Bound Trunks open right away. Only locked chests, which occasionally come from normal fishing, require lockpicking.

What lockpicking skill do fished locked chests need?

Small Locked Chest needs 1 skill, Sturdy Locked Chest 70, Ironbound Locked Chest 175 and Reinforced Locked Chest 250. Rogues are the class that can pick them.

What is inside the trunks?

Mostly cloth, leather and healing and mana potions of the zone level. Less often bags, gems, green items and rare recipes. Value grows from simple trunks up to Mithril Bound ones.
