Engineering Pets in WoW Vanilla 1.12.1 — Squirrel, Toad, Lil' Smoky

Section: Professions 5 min read Vanilla 1.12.1 · x5 Updated 16.10.2026

Engineering pets are the only companions in WoW Classic that players build themselves. The Mechanical Squirrel, the Lifelike Mechanical Toad, Lil' Smoky, the Pet Bombling and the Tranquil Mechanical Yeti each need a different skill level and schematic; below is where to find them and which materials to prepare on the WoW x5 server.

What engineering pets are

In patch 1.12.1 a mechanical pet works exactly like a vendor cat: it is an item in your bags that summons and dismisses the critter on right click. It cannot fight and gives no bonuses. The difference is the origin: you cannot buy it from an NPC, an engineer crafts it from a schematic. The general mechanics and the full list of critters are collected in our hub on companion pets in WoW Classic.

How to make an engineering pet: step by step

  1. Learn the profession with our engineering guide and level the skill to the required value.
  2. Get the schematic: world drop, guild gift or quest reward; see the table.
  3. Gather the materials; many parts (modulators, Thorium Widgets, power cores) are crafted by the engineer.
  4. Keep the tools in your bags, a Blacksmith Hammer and an Arclight Spanner; every recipe in the table needs them.
  5. Craft the item and right-click it.

Where to get the schematics

Mechanical Squirrel. The schematic drops very rarely from ordinary mobs in the starting and early zones of both factions and can also be found in simple chests. It does not bind, so buying it on the auction house is usually easier; see our article on engineering schematics for the different types.

Lifelike Mechanical Toad. This schematic is a world drop too: high-level mobs such as the undead of the Western Plaguelands and the creatures of Felwood and Winterspring drop it, and it also appears in Mithril Lockboxes. Crafting needs 265 skill; the engineer makes the Thorium Widgets, and our thorium farming guide helps with the ore.

Lil' Smoky and Pet Bombling. In 1.12.1 these schematics cannot be looted from mobs. A specialized engineer renews the membership card with the master of their school every two weeks for 2 gold (the quest Membership Card Renewal). Gnomish masters are Tinkmaster Overspark in Ironforge and Oglethorpe Obnoticus in Booty Bay; Goblin masters are Nixx Sprocketspring in Gadgetzan and Vazario Linkgrease in Ratchet, and a guild gift then arrives by mail. With a small chance it contains a schematic: Lil' Smoky for gnomes, the Pet Bombling for goblins. You can renew more often than every two weeks, and many engineers do so to fish for the schematic. Picking a school is covered in our Gnomish Engineering and Goblin Engineering guides.

Tranquil Mechanical Yeti. The schematic is taught by Umi Rumplesnicker in Everlook (Winterspring) after her mechanical yeti quest chain. You need level 55 and 250 Engineering.

Tips for engineers

Совет

The squirrel, the toad and the yeti can be crafted for profit: they only bind when used and sell well on the auction house to collectors of both factions.

  • Lil' Smoky and the Pet Bombling are trophies for yourself: they cannot be traded, so each pet shows off the engineer's school.
  • Do not confuse them with the quest reward Mechanical Chicken: it is mechanical too, but it comes from a quest and needs no skill.
  • The engineering devices that actually help in combat are listed in our article on engineering combat gadgets.

FAQ

What is the first pet an engineer can make?

The Mechanical Squirrel Box. The schematic requires 75 Engineering and drops from low-level mobs all over the world; the materials are a Copper Modulator, a Handful of Copper Bolts, a Copper Bar and two Malachite.

Where do I get the Lil' Smoky or Pet Bombling schematic?

In 1.12.1 these schematics only come from engineering guild gifts. Gnomish engineers can get Lil' Smoky and Goblin engineers the Pet Bombling, with a small chance after renewing the membership card for 2 gold. Both schematics and the finished pets bind on pickup.

Can I sell an engineering pet on the auction house?

The Mechanical Squirrel, the Lifelike Mechanical Toad and the Tranquil Mechanical Yeti can be sold, as they only bind when used. Lil' Smoky and the Pet Bombling cannot, since they bind on pickup.

Do mechanical pets fight?

No. Like every companion in 1.12.1 they are summoned and dismissed by right-clicking the item, never attack and give no bonuses. They are cosmetic and a badge of pride for an engineer.
