How to lead a raid in WoW Classic: the raid leader guide
The raid leader (RL) is the brain of the raid: they gather 40 players, hand out roles, explain tactics and keep discipline so the night does not turn into a chain of wipes. The RL does not have to top the meters — the job is organisation and voice. Below are the raid leader's duties in WoW Classic 1.12 and the flow from forming up to the boss kill.
Vanilla has no built-in ready check (that arrived in TBC). Ask for readiness by voice or a raid warning: /rw Ready? Post a plus — it filters out AFK and unbuffed players before the pull.

What a raid leader does
The raid leader makes 40 scattered players work as one machine:
- builds the roster and watches the tank/healer/DPS balance (see group composition);
- hands out raid roles and per-boss assignments;
- explains tactics before the pull and calls the fight;
- keeps discipline: silence on the pull, minimal spam, quick reaction to calls.
A good RL speaks short and to the point. Chatter on voice during a pull is the number-one cause of wipes.
Building a 40-man roster
A classic raid is 40 players = 8 groups of 5. A balance target for Molten Core and BWL:
| Role | Count | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Tanks | 4–5 | main tank plus off-tanks on adds |
| Healers | 12–15 | tank and raid healing |
| Ranged DPS | 10–12 | mages, warlocks, hunters |
| Melee DPS | 8–10 | warriors, rogues, cats |
Before you leave, check attunements and the raid lockout so you do not gather people for an already-saved instance.
Assignments before the boss
Before the pull, hand out zones of responsibility:
- tanks — who is main, who off-tanks and on which adds (see main and off-tank);
- healers — who heals tanks, who heals the raid (the heal lead splits this);
- crowd control — who holds what (see crowd control);
- marks and kill order — set raid markers;
- decurse — who removes curses and magic (see decursing).
◆Calls and comms in combat
The RL's levers during a fight:
/rw <text>— raid warning: critical calls shown to everyone in large text;- raid markers on targets — silently show what to hit and what to hold;
- voice (Discord/TeamSpeak) — short calls: "pull", "stack", "spread";
- a main assist — all DPS hit the skull on the assist's target.
React to threat early: call for held burst if a DPS is catching the tank on threat.
◆Discipline and wipe reviews
- After a wipe, do not name-and-shame — name the mistake and the fix (see wipe recovery).
- Demand consumables and world buffs beforehand, not on the pull.
- Keep the pace: long pauses burn world buffs.

FAQ
?Does a raid leader need top DPS
No. The raid leader's job is organisation, assignments and calls, not a spot on the damage meters. RLs often lead from a tank or healer role.
?Is there a ready check in vanilla
No, the built-in ready check was added in TBC. In WoW Classic 1.12 readiness is asked by voice or raid warning and players post a plus.
?How many players in a classic raid
Forty players — eight groups of five. Twenty-player raids (Zul'Gurub, Ruins of Ahn'Qiraj) use half that.
