A 40-man raid is not a crowd but 8 groups of 5, and who sits with whom decides the whole raid's damage and survivability. Group buffs — shaman totems, paladin auras and blessings — only affect their own party of five. Here is how to arrange a raid into groups in WoW Classic 1.12 so every buff works at its best.

Совет

The core rule: group buffs only hit their own party of 5. Shaman totems (Horde) and paladin auras/blessings (Alliance) do not affect the whole raid, so buff carriers are spread to boost the right players: Windfury with melee DPS, Mana Spring with casters.

Why groups matter

The raid splits into 8 groups of 5, and some buffs are group-wide — only for their party:

  • shaman totems (Horde) — for the party around the totem;
  • paladin auras (Alliance) — for their party;
  • some effects (a warrior's Battle Shout, for example) are also local.

So group-buff carriers are spread across parties to boost those who gain the most.

Grouping: Horde (totems)

Shamans drop totems for their party, so they are seated deliberately:

GroupWho to seat
Melee DPSshaman with Windfury — a huge damage boost for warriors
Castersshaman with Mana Spring
Tanksshaman with Tremor / Stoneskin

Windfury on a warrior party is one of the Horde raid's biggest damage multipliers.

Grouping: Alliance (paladins)

Paladins hand out blessings and auras:

  • Blessing of Kings for everyone (stat buff), Might for melee DPS, Wisdom for casters/healers;
  • Blessing of Salvation for DPS and healers, lowering threat and shedding excess aggro;
  • auras (Concentration Aura, say) affect the paladin's party.

Paladins are spread across groups, each assigned its own set of blessings.

Overall group balance

  • melee DPS — with a warrior (Battle Shout) and a Windfury shaman;
  • casters — with Mana Spring and mana restoration;
  • tanks — with stabilising totems/auras;
  • do not forget group composition inside the fives and raid roles.

Who sets it up and when

The raid leader sets the arrangement before entering the instance, along with marks and decurse assignments. Ready groups plus world buffs and consumables are the foundation of a clean raid. FAQ

Why do group buffs not affect the whole raid

In vanilla shaman totems and paladin auras/blessings are group-wide — they only work on their own party of five. So carriers are spread to the right groups.

Where should a Windfury shaman sit

In a melee party with warriors: Windfury sharply raises their damage and is one of the Horde raid's biggest damage multipliers.

Who arranges the raid into groups

The raid leader, before entering the instance. They spread group-buff carriers — shamans and paladins — to boost the right roles.
