Kiting is the art of dealing damage to an enemy while never letting it reach you. You keep distance with slows and roots, and the target dies before it ever catches you. It is the basis of solo survival, safe farming and some raid tactics. The best kiters are the frost mage and the hunter, but the techniques help every class.

Совет

The key to kiting is not turning your back to the enemy for long. Move in an arc, cast instant slows and shoot or hit in short windows. Running straight away gives the mob free back hits — retreat in a zigzag while watching the distance.

What kiting is

Kiting is distance control: the enemy can't reach you while you finish it off. You need it when:

  • the target hits too hard in melee;
  • you farm solo and don't want to take damage;
  • you must lead a dangerous mob away from the group or stall it in a raid tactic.

The core of kiting is a kit of slows, roots and instant on-the-move damage.

Kiting tools by class

ClassKiting kit
MageFrostbolt, Frost Trap, Cone of Cold, Frost Nova
HunterConcussive Shot, Wing Clip, traps, Scare Beast
WarlockCurse of Exhaustion, Fear, Curse of Weakness
DruidFeral Charge, Entangling Roots (caster form)
ShamanEarthbind Totem, Frost Shock slow

The cleanest kite belongs to the frost mage: Nova roots, and Shatter on a frozen target gives burst.

Technique: how to kite properly

  • Root/slow the target first to open a gap.
  • Move in an arc, not straight back, to take fewer back hits.
  • Cast instants on the move, only stand still for an important cast.
  • Use terrain — narrow paths, corners and slopes help break distance.
  • Watch mana/energy — kites are long, and your resource runs out before the target if you burn everything (see mana).

Where to use kiting

  • Solo farm and leveling — safely kill strong mobs; see the mage AoE farm.
  • Escape — break away from a chaser in world PvP.
  • Raid tactics — lead away unkillable adds (kiting on some fights).
  • Dungeons — stall an extra mob while the tank handles the pack, instead of crowd control.

How to master kiting on WowX5 x5

Roll a frost mage or hunter, bind slows and roots to convenient keybinds and macros, and practice on solo farm. Then mana management and crowd control by class come in handy. On WowX5 x5 a fast start gives plenty of practice. Create an account, download the game and connect to play.wowx5.ru.

What is kiting in WoW Classic

Kiting is dealing damage to an enemy while keeping distance: you hold the target with slows and roots and it dies before reaching you. It is the basis of solo survival and safe farming.

Which class kites best

The frost mage and hunter kite best thanks to plentiful slows, roots and instant on-the-move damage. The techniques are useful for other classes too.

How do you kite without taking back hits

Move in an arc rather than straight back, root the target with instant abilities and cast on the move. Running with your back to the enemy gives it free hits.
