The Defias Brotherhood is the most tragic gang of Vanilla. They are not villains by birth but betrayed laborers whom treachery pushed onto the path of crime.
The betrayed builders
After the Second War, Stormwind lay in ruins. The Stonemasons' Guild, led by Edwin VanCleef, rebuilt the city — but the corrupt nobility refused to pay the masons and cast them out. The insulted workers formed the Defias Brotherhood.
Uprising in Westfall
The exiled brotherhood settled in Westfall, turning the kingdom's breadbasket into a nest of banditry. The Defias raid farms, hire goblins and even murlocs, and in the old mine of the Deadmines secretly build a giant war galleon.

Significance in Vanilla
The Defias are the first serious Alliance dungeon. In the Deadmines young heroes face their first true boss — Edwin VanCleef. The brotherhood's story raises a grown-up question: who is the real villain — the bandits, or the nobles who betrayed them?
The red bandanas of the Defias are their signature symbol, worn by every member from common thug to VanCleef himself.
The Defias on an x5 server
The Deadmines is one of the first dungeons young Alliance players clear, usually at levels 17–22. With x5 rates it is easy to reach, and the dungeon is memorable for its final battle on the deck of a pirate galleon against Edwin VanCleef. It drops excellent starter gear: blades, shoulders and a famous recipe. The Defias quest chain begins back in Elwynn Forest and runs across all of Westfall, introducing newcomers to the kingdom's story.
