The dragonflights are the five ancient broods of dragons in Azeroth, each with its own scale colour, power and duty to the world. Their leaders are the Dragon Aspects, empowered by the titans themselves with a fragment of their might to guard creation. To understand the dragons is to understand who truly protects Azeroth.
Dragons are easy to confuse by colour, but each flight is a distinct power. Below is a short map of the five broods with links to a deep dive on each.
Where the dragonflights came from
When the titans ordered the young Azeroth, they raised five great dragons and gave each of them dominion over one facet of the world. So the five flights were born. Their leaders became the Aspects, and the dragons themselves became unseen guardians ruling the elements, time and dreams, rarely meddling in mortal affairs.
For ages the flights kept the balance. But the betrayal of Neltharion, maddened by the whispers of the Old Gods, shattered that unity and turned the black flight into an enemy of all living things.

In Vanilla players most often cross blades with the black flight: its scions Onyxia and Nefarian are iconic raid bosses. From the green flight burst the maddened Dragons of Nightmare, while the blue flight is represented on the map by the world boss Azuregos. This is the organisation of the dragonflights in action.
