The black dragonflight are the fallen dragons of Azeroth, turned into an instrument of destruction. Once their leader Neltharion was the Aspect of Earth, guardian of the deep and ally of the other flights. But the whispers of the Old Gods drove him mad, and he became Deathwing the Destroyer — one of the world's worst enemies.
The black flight is the only one to turn against all the others. Its spawn do not guard the world but strive to subjugate it.
The fall of Neltharion
Of all the Dragon Aspects, Neltharion was the mightiest in body — the embodiment of the power of earth. But it was that very might the Old Gods chose as their instrument, their voices whispering hatred and paranoia to him.
At the decisive moment of the War of the Ancients, Neltharion forged the Demon Soul and turned it against his own kin, nearly destroying all the dragonflights. Since then he and his spawn are enemies of all living things, and he took the name Deathwing.
Onyxia and Nefarian
In Vanilla it is the black flight that gives players the most famous dragon battles. Deathwing's daughter Onyxia weaves intrigue in Stormwind and awaits heroes in her lair. Her brother Nefarian has entrenched himself in Blackwing Lair deep in Blackrock Mountain, where he runs monstrous experiments, crossing black dragons with the other flights.
Both are among the most fearsome raid bosses in Classic — a true test for a well-drilled raid.
