When Archimonde had almost reached the summit, Malfurion called the spirits of the Ashenvale forests. Thousands of wisps detonated upon the Defiler, and the Legion's warlord was destroyed at the very roots of Nordrassil.

Archimonde's fall ended the Third War and bled the Legion on Azeroth. That is why in the Vanilla era demons act in scattered pockets, and the night elves guard Ashenvale and the approaches to Hyjal.
