The Arcane Crystal is a rare green gem that miners find in thorium veins. It is the key reagent of Transmute: Arcanite, so alchemists, blacksmiths and raiders always need it. On the WoW x5 server demand for crystals stays high through the entire level 60 endgame.

What the Arcane Crystal is

In the Russian client the item is called «Чародейный кристалл»; players also call it simply the arcane gem. It is an uncommon (green) trade good, item level 60, it stacks to 20 and sells to a vendor for only 20 copper. Its real value is set by the auction house: on its own it does little, but without it you cannot make an Arcanite Bar.

How to get Arcane Crystals

Thorium veins. The main source is Mining. The crystal is bonus loot that drops together with Thorium Ore. A Small Thorium Vein requires skill 245, a Rich Thorium Vein requires 275.
Veins in dungeons and raids. Ooze Covered Thorium Veins are found in a cave in southern Un'Goro Crater, and Hakkari Thorium Veins grow inside Zul'Gurub, where the crystal chance is noticeably higher.
Ahn'Qiraj obsidian. Small and Large Obsidian Chunks in the Ahn'Qiraj raids occasionally contain a crystal as well.
Sacks of gems. The Yellow Sack of Gems, dropped by Onyxia, the Dragons of Nightmare and Lord Kazzak, almost always contains an Arcane Crystal.
Auction house. If you are not a miner, buy crystals from other players — the fastest route for an alchemist.

The takeaway is simple: the crystal is rare, roughly one per several dozen veins. It pays to mine every thorium node on your route, not only the rich ones.

Uses and key recipes

Transmute: Arcanite. An alchemist with skill 275 buys «Recipe: Transmute Arcanite» from Alchemist Pestlezugg, the alchemy supplies vendor in Gadgetzan. The transmute needs a Philosopher's Stone, one Thorium Bar and one Arcane Crystal; it has a long cooldown, which keeps arcanite scarce. Blacksmiths turn arcanite into items such as the Arcanite Reaper.

Naxxramas attunement. Archmage Angela Dosantos at Light's Hope Chapel casts the attunement for reagents: at Honored with the Argent Dawn — 5 Arcane Crystals, 2 Nexus Crystals, a Righteous Orb and 60 gold; at Revered — 2 crystals, 1 Nexus Crystal and 30 gold. T3 set quests. The belts and bracers of the cloth sets (Frostfire, Plagueheart, Faith) and the Dreamwalker Wristguards require 1–2 Arcane Crystals. See the T3 set overview.

Economy tips

The crystal is the bottleneck of arcanite: a bar almost always sells for more than a Thorium Bar plus a crystal, so an alchemist should keep crystals ready for every transmute cooldown.
Miners do better selling crystals one by one and thorium ore in stacks: crystal demand is stable from the first raids to Naxxramas.
Prices usually climb before Naxxramas opens because of the attunement and T3 quests — stock up early.
Do not confuse the crystal with other rare gems from veins: in 1.12.1 it cannot be disenchanted and there is no Jewelcrafting in Vanilla.
