Who are the banshees
A banshee is a ghostly undead, the spirit of a slain woman raised by the necromancy of the Scourge. Most often banshees were made from fallen high elves, whose kingdom Quel'Thalas was ravaged by Arthas as he fought his way to the Sunwell.
A banshee is bodiless and can turn invisible. Her chief weapons are the magical wail that tears foes apart and the ability to drain magic. This is no mindless undead but a cunning, vengeful spirit that remembers its former life and the agony of its transformation.

The banshee's two dread powers are the wail and possession. The banshee's piercing scream brings death and terror, cutting off spells and rending flesh. And through possession the banshee leaves her ghostly form and enters the body of a living foe, bending it to her will.
These abilities made banshees invaluable scouts and saboteurs in the Lich King's army: where an abomination or a mob of ghouls cannot pass, an unseen vengeful spirit slips through.
Sylvanas Windrunner
The fate of Sylvanas Windrunner is the heart of the banshee legend. Ranger-General of Quel'Thalas, she desperately defended her homeland from the Scourge invasion but fell to Arthas. In mockery he denied her death, tearing out her soul and turning her into a banshee doomed to serve the murderer of her people.
Later, when the Lich King's will weakened, Sylvanas wrested her freedom and led the other freed dead — the Forsaken — regaining a semblance of a body.
