Chieftain of the Frostwolves

The Frostwolf clan lived on the snowy peaks of Draenor and was known for its loyalty to shamanic tradition. Durotan inherited leadership from his father and led the clan with his mate Draka. He was a close friend of Orgrim Doomhammer — a friendship that would later change the fate of the whole Horde.

Refusing Mannoroth's blood

When the warlock Gul'dan offered the chieftains the blood of the demon Mannoroth, Durotan refused and kept his clan away from the ritual. Thanks to this the Frostwolves escaped the blood curse that enslaved the other orcs to the Burning Legion.

Exile to the Alterac Mountains

For his defiance Gul'dan branded the Frostwolves traitors and exiled them. During the First War the clan ended up in the harsh Alterac Mountains, where it learned to survive among snow and ice near human lands.

Death and the fate of his son

Durotan tried to warn Orgrim about Gul'dan's plot, but assassins caught him and Draka in the forest. Their infant son was found by the human Aedelas Blackmoore and raised as a gladiator slave. That is how the boy got the name Thrall — and later freed his people.

Legacy in WoW Classic

Durotan's memory lives across the game. Thrall named the new orc homeland Durotar, and the Frostwolf clan still holds Alterac Valley. On the Alterac Valley battleground Horde players fight for the Frostwolves against the Stormpike dwarves.

Why it matters

Durotan's story explains why Thrall's orcs value freedom and shamanism rather than demon magic. Without his choice there would be no new Horde, no Orgrimmar and no alliance with the tauren and trolls.
