Essence of Undeath and Ichor of Undeath: Farming, Recipes, Transmute
Essence of Undeath is a green elemental reagent of the Plaguelands era: without it you cannot tailor the Robe of the Void, forge the Persuader or apply the Unholy Weapon enchant. On the WoW x5 server running 1.12.1 it mostly comes from elite undead dungeons, while its "little sister" — Ichor of Undeath — drops from undead enemies all over the world. Below are sources, drop chances and recipes taken strictly from our game server database.

◆What Essence of Undeath and Ichor of Undeath Are
Both items belong to the elemental reagent family described in detail on the elemental reagents hub. Unlike fire, water, earth and air, undeath has no "elemental" tier and no "heart to essence" recipe: Ichor of Undeath is a standalone material, not an intermediate step. There is no way to turn ichor into essence in 1.12.1.

Where Essence of Undeath Drops
The main rule of 1.12.1: the essence drops almost exclusively from elite undead of level 55–61. The mass drop from ordinary Eastern Plaguelands mobs was only added in patch 2.3, so guides written for later versions are misleading here. The chances below come from our server loot tables.

The most reliable spot for a group is Stratholme: a full run of the living and undead sides means hundreds of elite ghosts and ghouls. The second is Scholomance, where the essence drops from regular skeletons as well as bosses such as Ras Frostwhisper, Jandice Barov and Rattlegore. In the open world of the Eastern Plaguelands it is worth checking the Scourge Warders in Plaguewood and the rare elites — but there is no mass farm there.
◆Stratholme and Scholomance: How to Farm
In Stratholme the undead side pays off best: banshees, ghouls and abominations stand in dense packs, and Scourgestones for reputation drop on the way to the Slaughterhouse. In Scholomance clear every hall completely: skeletons and spectral teachers drop the essence no worse than bosses.
Essence of Undeath is a green item, so in a group it is rolled according to the loot rules for uncommon items. Agree in advance who needs it for a recipe so you do not waste time on rolls.
Ichor of Undeath: Where It Drops and What It Is For
Ichor of Undeath drops much more often — about 3.5–7% from undead enemies of level 45 and above. Good solo spots:
- Ruins of Andorhal in the Western Plaguelands — Skeletal Executioner, Skeletal Acolyte, Skeletal Flayer (level 50–56).
- Plaguewood and Corin's Crossing in the Eastern Plaguelands — Cannibal Ghoul, Stitched Horror, Hate Shrieker.
- Ruins of Eldarath in Azshara — Highborne Apparition and Highborne Lichling of level 45–47, the earliest source.
- Winterspring — Suffering Highborne and Anguished Highborne.
Ichor of UndeathItem Level 45Max Stack: 10Sell Price: 4 sDruids need the ichor for the class quest "The Ichor of Undeath" from Ogtinc in Azshara: the chain runs between "Of Coursers We Know" and "Blood of Morphaz", and one ichor is required. It is also used in the Elixir of Greater Water Breathing (alchemy), the Soul Pouch (tailoring), the Enchant Cloak - Greater Resistance and the Gnomish Death Ray.
◆Transmute Water to Undeath
An alchemist with skill 275 can convert essences into each other. Our server database has exactly two transmutes for undeath: Essence of Water → Essence of Undeath and the reverse, Essence of Undeath → Essence of Water. Both require a Philosopher's Stone and share their cooldown with other transmutes — 1 day. The recipes are not sold by vendors: they are rare drops from enemies of level 45–60. The essence appears in recipes of five professions. The key ones:

The Unholy Weapon formula drops from the Thuzadin Shadowcaster in Stratholme, and the Lifestealing formula from the Spectral Researcher in Scholomance. These enchants are covered in the weapon enchants section. The last recipe — Lifestealing — also needs Living Essence.
◆The Argent Dawn and Essence of Undeath
A common question is whether you can turn in the essence or the ichor to the Argent Dawn. There are no such quests in 1.12.1: the Dawn's repeatable turn-ins accept Minion's, Invader's and Corruptor's Scourgestones and reward the Argent Dawn Valor Token. But the route is the same — farming Stratholme and Scholomance brings stones for Argent Dawn reputation and essences for selling or crafting at the same time.

FAQ
?What is the best place to farm Essence of Undeath in 1.12.1?
Elite undead dungeons: Stratholme, Scholomance and the western wing of Dire Maul. Almost every undead enemy of level 55–61 there drops the essence at roughly 2–5 percent. Regular undead in the Eastern Plaguelands barely drop it in 1.12.1 — the mass drop from non-elite mobs was only added in an expansion.
?Can Ichor of Undeath be turned into Essence of Undeath?
No. Patch 1.12.1 has no recipe and no usable item that converts Ichor of Undeath into Essence of Undeath. They are two separate reagents with separate recipes. Apart from drops, the essence can only be made by an alchemist transmuting Essence of Water.
?Can I turn in Essence of Undeath to the Argent Dawn?
No, there are no quests in 1.12.1 that accept the essence or the ichor for Argent Dawn reputation. Reputation comes from Scourgestones and quests. However, farming Stratholme and Scholomance gives you both stones and essences at the same time.
?How much does Essence of Undeath sell for to a vendor?
A vendor pays 10 silver each, and it stacks to 10. That is two and a half times more than Essence of Water at 4 silver, so the undeath-to-water transmute is only worth it for a specific recipe.
