Getting to Gadgetzan, the Goblin City of Tanaris (WoW 1.12.1)
How to get to Gadgetzan is the key question for a level 40+ player heading to Tanaris, Zul'Farrak or further into southern Kalimdor. Gadgetzan is the neutral goblin capital in the middle of the desert, with flight masters for both factions. Below are the Alliance and Horde routes on the WoW x5 server (Vanilla 1.12.1).
Contents
◆Where Gadgetzan Is
The city stands in the north of Tanaris, a sandy desert in southeastern Kalimdor. Thousand Needles borders Tanaris to the north and Un'Goro Crater to the west. The zone is meant for roughly levels 40–50, and the Zul'Farrak dungeon lies northwest of the city.
Gadgetzan is surrounded by a sand wall; inside are an inn, a bank, a neutral auction house and trainers. Vendors and quests are covered in the Gadgetzan city guide; this page is only about the road.

How to Get to Gadgetzan as Alliance
- Reach Kalimdor. From Stormwind or Ironforge go to Menethil Harbor and take the ship to Theramore. Night elves already start in Kalimdor.
- Get to Thousand Needles. Option one: from Thalanaar on the eastern edge of Feralas, head east into the canyon. Option two: from Theramore go south through the Barrens to the Great Lift; it is guarded by Horde guards, so pass it carefully.
- Follow the canyon east to the Shimmering Flats with the Mirage Raceway.
- At the south end of the flats take the mountain pass into Tanaris; Gadgetzan stands right behind it.
- Unlock the flight path at Bera Stonehammer. From then on you can fly in, for example, from Theramore and Thalanaar.
The walk through Feralas is described in how to get to Feralas.
How to Get to Gadgetzan as Horde
- Fly to Freewind Post in Thousand Needles. If you do not have it yet, fly to Camp Taurajo, follow the road south and ride the Great Lift down into the canyon.
- From Freewind Post head east along the canyon to the Shimmering Flats.
- Cross the flats to the south and take the mountain pass into Tanaris.
- Unlock the flight path at Bulkrek Ragefist, with flights to Orgrimmar, Thunder Bluff and the Crossroads.
From the Eastern Kingdoms the Horde reaches Orgrimmar by zeppelin from Undercity or Grom'gol Base Camp. More about the canyon in how to get to Thousand Needles.

Entrance and Things to Know
- The northern pass at the south end of the Shimmering Flats is the only land route from Thousand Needles into Tanaris. There is no direct road from Dustwallow Marsh.
- The western exit leads down into Un'Goro: see how to get to Un'Goro Crater. Patch 1.11 added a neutral flight path at Marshal's Refuge with a route to Gadgetzan.
- Guards. Goblin guards protect visitors inside the walls. The arena in the middle of town and the desert outside the gates are common places for faction fights, especially at high level.
- The Caverns of Time in eastern Tanaris are closed to players in 1.12.1.
- Water. It is easy to run low on supplies in the desert: buy food and drink at the inn and set your hearthstone there too.

Hearthstone and the Local Elixir
Set your hearthstone at the Gadgetzan inn while leveling in Tanaris and running Zul'Farrak. And a local goblin alchemist, after a quest chain, provides the famous elixir with a random effect: it may turn you into a skeleton, shrink you or grant slow fall.

◆Why Go to Gadgetzan
Tanaris leveling starts here, with the route in the Tanaris leveling guide, and the city is the closest base for the dungeon: see how to get to Zul'Farrak. The town teaches goblin engineering, and cartel quests raise your standing, see the Steamwheedle Cartel reputation guide. The overall road map is in the travel guide and the flight paths guide.

FAQ
?Where is Gadgetzan?
In the north of the Tanaris desert, in southeastern Kalimdor. It is a walled neutral goblin city of the Steamwheedle Cartel, open to both factions.
?How do I reach Gadgetzan for the first time?
On foot through Thousand Needles: east along the canyon to the Shimmering Flats, then south through the mountain pass into Tanaris. The city stands right behind the pass.
?Does Gadgetzan have flight paths for both factions?
Yes. Bera Stonehammer handles Alliance gryphons, Bulkrek Ragefist handles Horde wind riders. Each faction uses only its own flight master, and the point must be unlocked by visiting the city.
?Is Gadgetzan safe?
Inside the walls the goblin guards attack whoever starts a fight. Outside, in the desert and around the arena, the guards do not always help, so players of the other faction are dangerous there.
