Deadwind Pass is a small, eerie zone in eastern Azeroth, connecting the Swamp of Sorrows to Elwynn Forest. Level range: 55–60. It is best known as the foreboding approach to the mysterious Karazhan tower and is one of the most atmospheric — if sparsely populated — zones in Vanilla WoW.

The zone is largely empty — few enemies, almost no quests. Its main value is as a transit corridor and a brief quest stop during the 55–60 grind.
Locations and Points of Interest
Karazhan Tower
inv_misc_key_15 The iconic Karazhan Tower stands in the southwest. In Vanilla patch 1.12, the Karazhan raid is unavailable — the entrance is sealed. The tower belonged to Medivh, the Last Guardian, and radiates dark magic. Walking around it and reading its lore is still worthwhile for the atmosphere.
Altars of Ogran
Scattered throughout the zone are Altars of Ogran — stone obelisks tied to a short quest chain from Ogran, a neutral NPC inside the pass.
Atlas Ogres
The northern part of the zone is home to Atlas Ogres, hostile mobs at levels 55–57. They are the only killable enemies suitable for leveling XP in the zone.
Quests
Deadwind Pass has very few quests:
- "Ogran's Message" — starts the short quest chain from Ogran.
- "The Strength of the Atlas" — kill Atlas Ogre mobs.
On an x5 rate server, all Deadwind Pass content can be cleared in under 30 minutes. Combine it with quests in Swamp of Sorrows for an efficient session.
Farming and Routes
No dedicated farming spots exist here. Reasons to visit:
- Transit: fastest overland path from Swamp of Sorrows to Elwynn/Stormwind.
- Ogran quest chain: fast XP for 55–58 characters.

Tips for the x5 Server
Deadwind Pass is a quick detour during the 55–60 push. After finishing Tanaris or Un'Goro, swing through here for Ogran's quests before moving on to Eastern Plaguelands or Western Plaguelands.
With x5 rates, the entire zone is done in 20–30 minutes.

FAQ
Can you enter Karazhan in WoW Classic Vanilla? No. The Karazhan raid was added in The Burning Crusade. The entrance is sealed in patch 1.12.
Why visit Deadwind Pass at all? For Ogran's short quest chain and as a transit route. There is almost nothing to farm here.
Are there herbs or ore in the zone? No unique resources. Standard 50–60 herbs (Blindweed, Arthas' Tears) occasionally spawn; almost no ore nodes.
