How to Reach Deadwind Pass and the Tower of Karazhan
How to get to Deadwind Pass is a question every player asks sooner or later: this canyon is the shortest path between Duskwood and the Swamp of Sorrows, and the famous tower of Karazhan rises at its southern end. Deadwind Pass is a dead, wind-swept zone with no towns and no flight paths. Here are the Alliance and Horde routes on the WoW x5 server (Vanilla 1.12.1).

◆Where Deadwind Pass is located
The pass lies in the middle of the southern Eastern Kingdoms: Duskwood to the west, the Swamp of Sorrows to the east, with mountains closing the canyon to the north and south. The recommended level is 55 to 60, yet players of level 30 to 40 cross it all the time on their way from Darkshire to the Swamp of Sorrows. Zone lore and details are in the Deadwind Pass article.
Subzones in the 1.12 client:
- Deadwind Ravine, the western entrance from Duskwood;
- Ariden's Camp, an abandoned camp in the north;
- Deadman's Crossing, a signposted junction where a road branches south to the tower;
- Sleeping Gorge, The Vice and Grosh'gok Compound, home of the ogres;
- Morgan's Plot and Karazhan, the village ruins and the tower in the south.

How to get there as Alliance
- Fly from Stormwind to Darkshire. If you have not discovered it yet, see how to get to Darkshire.
- Leave Darkshire by the road heading east.
- The road climbs into Deadwind Ravine and onto the pass. Stay on it until Deadman's Crossing.
- From there the road continues east down into the Swamp of Sorrows, while a branch leads south to the ruins below Karazhan.
An alternative approach is from the east: from Nethergarde Keep in the Blasted Lands walk north into the Swamp of Sorrows and then follow the road west. This works well if you are leveling in that part of the world.
How to get there as Horde
The closest Horde flight path is Stonard in the Swamp of Sorrows.
- Fly or walk to Stonard; the route is in how to get to Swamp of Sorrows.
- From Stonard follow the road west: it leads straight into the pass.
The second option starts at Grom'gol Base Camp in Stranglethorn Vale: take the main road north into Duskwood, then head east while avoiding the guarded Alliance town of Darkshire, and follow the eastern road into the canyon.
◆Where Karazhan is and what to know
- No flight path. There are no inns or vendors in the zone either, so stock up in Darkshire or Stonard.
- Karazhan is closed. Medivh's tower is visible from Deadman's Crossing, and a road leads south to it. In 1.12 you cannot get inside: the Karazhan raid was only added in The Burning Crusade.
- Ogres and spirits. Deadwind ogres live around the bend of the road to the tower and in nearby caves, and the village ruins at the foot of Karazhan are haunted by hostile undead. On the main road you mostly meet vultures and wisp-like sprites, which also attack on sight.
- Hardly any resources. Herbs and ore are practically absent, so the zone is of little interest for farming.

Deadwind Pass: summary table
| Point | What is there |
|---|---|
| Deadwind Ravine | Western entrance from Duskwood, road from Darkshire |
| Ariden's Camp | Abandoned camp in the north, no quests |
| Deadman's Crossing | Junction: east to the Swamp of Sorrows, south to Karazhan |
| The Vice and Grosh'gok Compound | Deadwind ogres, high level |
| Karazhan | Medivh's tower, closed in 1.12 |
| Nearest flight path | Darkshire (Alliance), Stonard (Horde) |
If you cross the pass at level 30 to 40, do not leave the road and keep moving: in 1.12 the danger mostly comes from creatures that wander up to the road on their own.
◆Why visit Deadwind Pass
The main reason is transit: this is how the Alliance gets from Darkshire, and the Horde from Stranglethorn, to the Swamp of Sorrows and the Sunken Temple entrance. The second is legend: many players come to see the tower of Medivh, where the events of the First War unfolded. To plan your trip across the south, see the flight paths guide and the travel guide.
