How to Reach Darnassus in WoW 1.12.1
How to get to Darnassus is one of the first questions gnomes, humans and dwarves ask when they need a night elf trainer or quest. Darnassus sits at the top of the World Tree Teldrassil, which is cut off from the mainland by the sea, so the trip always involves a boat and a portal. Here are all the routes on the WoW x5 server (Vanilla 1.12.1).

◆Where Is Darnassus
Darnassus is the night elf capital in the western part of Teldrassil, an island off the northwestern coast of Kalimdor. The city is built around a large lake, its districts are joined by bridges, and the Temple of the Moon rises above everything. For districts, the bank and trainers see the Darnassus city guide; for lore see the Darnassus article.

The island itself is the night elf starting zone for levels 1-10. At the foot of the tree, on the southern shore, lies the port of Rut'theran Village. It is the island's only sea gate: the boat from Auberdine docks here, the hippogryph master waits here and the portal up to Darnassus stands here. Getting to the island is covered in detail in how to get to Teldrassil.
How to Get to Darnassus as Alliance
Night elf from the starting area
- Finish the quests in Shadowglen and follow the road down to the village of Dolanaar.
- From Dolanaar follow the road west - it leads to the eastern gate of Darnassus.
- Only low-level beasts and furbolgs stand in the way, so you can walk it at a low level. The quest order is in the Teldrassil leveling guide and the night elf starting guide.
Human, dwarf or gnome from the Eastern Kingdoms
- From Ironforge or Stormwind travel to Menethil Harbor in the Wetlands - the route is in how to get to the Wetlands.
- At the docks take the boat to Auberdine in Darkshore.
- In Auberdine walk to the other pier and take the boat to Rut'theran Village.
- In Rut'theran step into the glowing portal - it takes you into Darnassus.
Boats run on a schedule and the wait is usually a couple of minutes. Be sure to discover the flight paths in Auberdine and Rut'theran: once you have them, you can fly between the two on a hippogryph.
From elsewhere in Kalimdor
If you already have the Auberdine flight path, fly there and then take the boat or a hippogryph to Rut'theran. The port and its piers are described in the Auberdine guide, and the way to Darkshore in how to get to Darkshore.
How to Get to Darnassus as Horde
To be honest: for the Horde Darnassus is an enemy capital and there is no peaceful way in. Horde players usually go there as a raid, to fight the guards or the city leaders.
- Fight your way into Darkshore through Ashenvale and reach Auberdine - the village is guarded by Alliance sentinels.
- The boat from Auberdine to Rut'theran is shared transport and both factions can ride it.
- In Rut'theran and in Darnassus itself the sentinels will attack you; on top of that, city patrols can see through stealth and invisibility.
- Horde players who die on the island resurrect at the Dolanaar graveyard, not in the city.
Where Is the Entrance to Darnassus

There are two ways into the city:
- The portal in Rut'theran - the main route for everyone arriving by sea. It stands in the village itself and its pink glow is hard to miss. You arrive in the western part of Darnassus, near the bank. The same portal takes you back down to Rut'theran.
- The eastern gate - the road from Dolanaar, used by night elves leveling on the island.
There is no flight master inside Darnassus in 1.12. To leave the island, take the portal down to Rut'theran and talk to the hippogryph master there. Druids can also leave via their own Moonglade teleport, see how to get to Moonglade.
Alliance mages can skip the boats entirely: the teleport is learned at level 30 and the group portal at level 50. All travel spells are listed in the mage portals and teleports guide.
Routes to Darnassus: Summary Table
| From | Alliance | Horde |
|---|---|---|
| Teldrassil (start) | Shadowglen → Dolanaar → gate | Not available |
| Eastern Kingdoms | Menethil Harbor → Auberdine → Rut'theran → portal | Only by fighting through Auberdine |
| Kalimdor | Fly to Auberdine → boat or hippogryph → portal | Through Ashenvale and Auberdine |
| Mage | Teleport at 30, portal at 50 | None |
Bind your Hearthstone at the Darnassus inn only if you visit often. For trips around Kalimdor the Auberdine inn is handier: both the boat and the hippogryphs are right there.
◆Why Go to Darnassus
The city has night elf druid and hunter trainers, class quests, an auction house and the Darnassus reputation, which at Exalted lets other Alliance races buy a saber mount. For more on moving around the world see the travel guide and the flight paths guide, and for binding see Hearthstone and travel.

FAQ
?How do I get to Darnassus from the Eastern Kingdoms?
Travel to Menethil Harbor in the Wetlands, take the boat to Auberdine in Darkshore, then take the second boat to Rut'theran Village at the foot of Teldrassil. Step into the portal in Rut'theran and it takes you straight into Darnassus.
?Is there a flight path in Darnassus?
No. In patch 1.12 there is no flight master inside Darnassus. The nearest hippogryph master is in Rut'theran Village, which flies to Auberdine. The portal in Rut'theran connects the village and the city.
?Can the Horde get into Darnassus?
Yes, but it is dangerous. The Auberdine boat and the Rut'theran portal work for the Horde too, but the sentinels in the village and the city attack Horde players, and Darnassus patrols can see through stealth. Dead Horde players are sent to the Dolanaar graveyard.
?Do mages have a teleport to Darnassus?
Yes. Alliance mages learn Teleport: Darnassus at level 30 and Portal: Darnassus at level 50. The teleport needs a Rune of Teleportation, the portal needs a Rune of Portals.
