How to Reach Alterac Mountains in WoW 1.12.1
How to get to Alterac Mountains is a question every player asks after picking up a Hillsbrad quest that says "head north to the ogres". The mountains are a level 30-40 zone without a flight path of their own, so the trip always starts from a neighboring town. Here is how to reach them in WoW 1.12.1 on the WoW x5 server for both factions, and where to find the Alterac Valley entrance.

◆Where Alterac Mountains is
Alterac Mountains is a mountain range in central Lordaeron on the Eastern Kingdoms continent. It borders Hillsbrad Foothills to the south, Silverpine Forest to the northwest across Lordamere Lake, and the Western Plaguelands to the northeast. This was once the kingdom of Alterac — read more on the Alterac Mountains wiki page.
The recommended level is 30-40. The zone has two parts: a green "outer" belt that blends into Hillsbrad and Silverpine, and the snowy "inner" highland with the Ruins of Alterac and Strahnbrad.
How to get there as Alliance
The Alliance base for this zone is Southshore in southern Hillsbrad Foothills.
- Fly to Southshore by gryphon. If you do not have it yet, walk from the Wetlands over Thandol Span and through Arathi Highlands, then follow the road west through Thoradin's Wall.
- Leave Southshore on the road heading north.
- At the first junction turn east.
- Keep going east until you pass a tower where the road splits again.
- Take the northern fork and go straight through the next crossroads. When the road starts to climb, you are in Alterac Mountains.
How to get there as Horde
The nearest Horde base is Tarren Mill in eastern Hillsbrad Foothills.
- From the Undercity walk south through Silverpine Forest into Hillsbrad, or fly to Tarren Mill if you already have the flight path.
- Leave Tarren Mill on the road heading west.
- At the junction turn north.
- Follow the road north for a short while — it leads into the mountains.
There is also a water route: from Silverpine Forest or the Undercity you can swim southeast across Lordamere Lake and come ashore inside the mountains. Hillsbrad's towns are covered on the Hillsbrad wiki page.
Entrances and what to know
- There is no flight path in the zone, and no dungeons or raids either. The nearest flights are Southshore and Tarren Mill; all connections are in the flight paths guide.
- Strahnbrad, near the entrance from Hillsbrad, is held by the Syndicate — more about the group on the Syndicate page.
- The Ruins of Alterac and Crushridge Hold are home to the Crushridge ogres. In 1.12.1 the ogres in the ruins are elite, so bring a group.
- Dalaran on the shore of Lordamere Lake is sealed under a magical dome. The city's history is on the Dalaran page.
- In the north, the pass at Chillwind Point leads into the Western Plaguelands, toward Chillwind Camp.
- The Alterac Valley entrances for both factions are in the snowy part of the mountains. Lieutenant Haggerdin and Warmaster Laggrond wait at the entrances.
Route table
| Point | What is there |
|---|---|
| Southshore | Nearest flight path and Alliance quests |
| Tarren Mill | Nearest flight path and Horde quests |
| Strahnbrad | Town held by the Syndicate |
| Ruins of Alterac | Elite ogres, level 30-40 quests |
| Dalaran | City under a magical dome by Lordamere Lake |
| Ravenholdt Manor | Seat of the Ravenholdt assassins' guild |
| Chillwind Point | Pass into the Western Plaguelands |
| Alterac Valley entrance | 40 vs 40 battleground from level 51 |
In 1.12.1 neither faction has a camp in the mountains, so pick up every Alterac quest in Southshore or Tarren Mill at once — it saves a lot of walking.
◆Why go to Alterac Mountains
The mountains are the natural follow-up to leveling in Hillsbrad: quests against ogres and the Syndicate, while yetis and mountain lions roam the peaks. The quest route is in the Alterac Mountains leveling guide. Rogues and collectors of rare rewards should visit Ravenholdt Manor: a separate mountain trail leads there, and the faction and its rewards are covered in the Ravenholdt reputation guide. At level 51+ the mountains lead to the signature battleground of Vanilla — see the Alterac Valley guide for tactics.
