How to Get to Western Plaguelands: Alliance and Horde Roads

Section: World & travel 4 min read Vanilla 1.12.1 · x5 Updated 07.10.2026

How to get to Western Plaguelands is a question almost every character faces around level 50. The zone lies in the north of the Eastern Kingdoms, three land routes lead into it, and in 1.12.1 only the Alliance has a flight path there. Below are step-by-step routes for both factions on the WoW x5 server.

Where Western Plaguelands is

Western Plaguelands is the former breadbasket of Lordaeron, ravaged by the Scourge. To the west it borders Tirisfal Glades, to the south the Alterac Mountains and the Hinterlands, and to the east the Thondroril River separates it from Eastern Plaguelands. The recommended level is roughly 51-58. A general overview is in the article Western Plaguelands.

Key landmarks: Chillwind Camp in the south, the ruined town of Andorhal in the center, the Scarlet Crusade stronghold of Hearthglen in the north, and Darrowmere Lake with the island of Caer Darrow in the southeast.

How to get there as Alliance

The Alliance has a flight path in the zone at Chillwind Camp. The first time, you have to walk there.

  1. Fly to Southshore in Hillsbrad Foothills.
  2. Take the road north into the Alterac Mountains. At the fork, turn east toward the village of Strahnbrad.
  3. Past Strahnbrad the road turns north and climbs to the Western Plaguelands border.
  4. Right past the border is Chillwind Camp, an Argent Dawn base. Discover the flight path.

An alternative starts at Aerie Peak in the Hinterlands: east of the town, in the woods before Quel'Danil Lodge, the Plaguemist Ravine runs north to the shore of Darrowmere Lake near Caer Darrow. Once the camp is discovered, it has flights to Ironforge and Aerie Peak.

How to get there as Horde

The Horde has no flight path of its own in Western Plaguelands in 1.12.1, so the journey always starts in the Undercity.

  1. Leave the Undercity onto the main road of Tirisfal Glades and head east.
  2. At the eastern edge of Tirisfal the road brings you to the Bulwark, a Horde outpost with Argent Dawn NPCs. In 1.12.1 there is no flight master and no inn there.
  3. Past the Bulwark gate lies Western Plaguelands. Stay on the road: it continues to Andorhal and east toward Eastern Plaguelands.

The second option runs from Tarren Mill north through the Alterac Mountains and Strahnbrad. However, that road passes right by the Alliance camp at Chillwind, so keep away from its guards. For the starting city, see the Undercity guide.

Zone entrances and dangerous spots

  • The Tirisfal border is the most common Horde entrance. Low-level players who wander here often die to level 50+ beasts right past the Bulwark gate.
  • The Alterac route is the main Alliance entrance; hostile Alterac NPCs roam the road near Strahnbrad.
  • The Hinterlands pass comes out right at Darrowmere Lake, which is handy if Scholomance is your goal.
  • There are no flying mounts and no portals to the zone in 1.12.1, so you travel on foot or by flight path.

Why go to Western Plaguelands

This is where the Argent Dawn quest chains against the Scourge and the plague cauldrons begin, and Caer Darrow holds the Scholomance entrance: the path to the door is covered in how to get to Scholomance. Quest order is in the Western Plaguelands leveling guide, and the next zone is covered in how to get to Eastern Plaguelands.

Совет

There is no inn at Chillwind Camp or at the Bulwark in 1.12.1. Alliance players should set their hearthstone in Southshore or Aerie Peak, Horde players in the Undercity or Tarren Mill.

The full flight map is in the flight paths guide, and general advice on getting around is in the travel guide.

FAQ

Does the Horde have a flight path in Western Plaguelands?

Not in patch 1.12.1. The Horde has no flight master in the zone: the nearest one is in the Undercity, and from there you walk east through Tirisfal Glades and the Bulwark. The Bulwark flight path was only added in Wrath of the Lich King.

Where is the Alliance flight path in Western Plaguelands?

At Chillwind Camp in the south of the zone, near the Alterac Mountains border. The gryphon master there is the gnome Bibilfaz Featherwhistle. You have to discover the point once by walking into the camp.

What level is Western Plaguelands?

The zone is designed for roughly level 51-58. Inside it, on the island of Caer Darrow, is the entrance to the Scholomance dungeon for level 58-60 characters.

Can I enter Western Plaguelands from the Hinterlands?

Yes, this route existed in 1.12. Between Aerie Peak and Quel'Danil Lodge, in the woods at the foot of the mountains (around 20, 48 on the Hinterlands map), the Plaguemist Ravine begins. It runs north and comes out on the shore of Darrowmere Lake near Caer Darrow. It is more dangerous for the Horde: Aerie Peak is an Alliance town and the high elves of Quel'Danil Lodge are hostile to the Horde.
