Alterac Mountains Leveling 30–40 — x5 Guide
The Alterac Mountains are a snow-swept highland in the north of the Eastern Kingdoms, tuned for 30–40. Blizzard-blown peaks, ruined Strahnbrad, Syndicate bandit camps and Crushridge ogre lairs. The ruins of Dalaran slumber under a dome, and to the north lies the entrance to the Alterac Valley battleground.
The Alterac Mountains are a 30–40 zone in the northern Eastern Kingdoms: the Syndicate, Crushridge ogres, Strahnbrad ruins, yetis, the Dalaran dome and the Alterac Valley entrance.

Level range and how to get there
The recommended range is level 30–40. There is no major town in the zone — quests come from neighbouring Hillsbrad Foothills (Southshore for the Alliance, Tarren Mill for the Horde). You enter from Hillsbrad to the south, Silverpine Forest to the west, and the north borders the Alterac Valley battleground.
Quest hubs and chains
Key spots: the ruins of Strahnbrad and Syndicate bandit camps across the zone; Crushridge ogre lairs in the east; yetis in the snow caves; and the Dalaran dome (no entry in vanilla). Most quests come from Hillsbrad — clear the Syndicate and ogres on their leads.
Where to level
No icons in the table — text only, so cells don't break.
| Spot | Level | What it gives |
|---|---|---|
| Strahnbrad ruins | 30–33 | Syndicate bandits, Hillsbrad quests |
| Syndicate camps | 33–36 | Human rogues for XP and cloth |
| Crushridge ogre lairs | 36–38 | Crushridge ogres, dense spawns |
| Snow caves and slopes | 38–40 | Yetis and wolves, push to 40 |
◆Elites
Elite Crushridge ogre chieftains and Syndicate officers roam the zone. Some Hillsbrad quests lead to elite cave targets — bring a group. Powerful elite mages circle the Dalaran dome; don't go in solo.
◆Nearby dungeons
There is no instanced dungeon inside the Alterac Mountains, but the north of the zone holds the entrance to Alterac Valley, vanilla's largest 40–60 battleground. It's too early at 30–40, but the zone is a handy landmark. The nearest classic instance is Shadowfang Keep in Silverpine Forest to the west (18–25).
Tips for the x5 server
- On x5 the 30–40 range is short — stick to Hillsbrad quests and clear the Syndicate.
- Crushridge ogres give solid XP and cloth — farm their lairs in a group.
- Stay away from the Dalaran dome — elite mages, and there's no entry in vanilla.
- Gather silver and gold ore along the slopes — the zone is rich in rare veins.
- Bring warming food and frost resistance for finishing on the upper slopes.
◆Where to go next
By 40 move to Tarren Mill → Badlands, the Western Plaguelands or Stranglethorn Vale. At 51+ return to Alterac Valley for PvP honor on x5.

The north of the Alterac Mountains holds the entrance to Alterac Valley, vanilla's largest battleground for levels 51–60. It's too early at 30–40; return later for PvP honor and rewards.
