Level range and how to get there
The recommended range is level 50–58. Alliance base at Morgan's Vigil in the south-east, Horde at Flame Crest in the north. The zone connects to the Searing Gorge through the mountain to the south and to Redridge to the east. Both factions have flight paths.
Quest hubs and chains
Key hubs: Morgan's Vigil and Flame Crest — faction bases with zone quests; the Altar of Storms by the mountain — a demon summoning point; and Dreadmaul Rock / the dragon wastes — black dragonspawn nests. Grab base quests in a batch — many lead to orc camps and the mountain's base.

Elites
Elite Blackrock orcs, fire giants and black dragonkin roam the zone. Around the Altar of Storms and the dragon wastes the elites are dangerous solo — bring a party. Some quests lead straight to the Blackrock Mountain dungeon entrances, where the endgame begins.

Blackrock Mountain in the centre is Vanilla's largest dungeon complex: Blackrock Depths (BRD) 52–60, Lower and Upper Blackrock Spire (LBRS/UBRS) 55–60, plus the Molten Core and Blackwing Lair (BWL) raids. A perfect combo: hit 55–58 in the steppes, then storm BRD and the spires.
Tips for the x5 server
- On x5 the 50–58 range is quick — stick to the base chains and combine with BRD runs.
- Blackrock orcs drop Runecloth — steady money on x5.
- Bring fire protection (potions, flasks) — lots of fire damage in the zone.
- The dragon wastes are a good XP and reputation spot, but watch for dragonkin patrols.
- Professions: the Burning Steppes have rich mithril and thorium veins and some Black Lotus spawns.
