How to Reach Desolace as Alliance and Horde

Section: World & travel 4 min read Vanilla 1.12.1 · x5 Updated 08.10.2026

How to get to Desolace is a question most players ask around level 30: this grey, blasted zone on the west coast of Kalimdor is walled off by mountains on almost every side, so your first trip there will be on foot. Below are the Alliance and Horde routes, landmarks and flight paths for the WoW x5 server on Vanilla 1.12.1.

Where Desolace is

Desolace is an arid plateau on the western coast of Kalimdor, between the Stonetalon Mountains to the north and Feralas to the south. The recommended level is 30–40. Mountain ranges seal the zone off from Mulgore in the east and the sea lies to the west, so there are only two land entrances: one from the north and one from the south.

Faction outposts:

  • Nijel's Point — the Alliance camp in the northern mountains of the zone.
  • Shadowprey Village — the Horde village on the south-western coast, on Sar'theris Strand, south of the Valley of Spears.
  • Ghost Walker Post — a small Horde tauren camp next to the Kodo Graveyard in central Desolace, with no flight master.

Alliance route

  1. Fly to Stonetalon Peak in the north of the Stonetalon Mountains. If you do not have that flight path yet, walk there from Ashenvale.
  2. Head south-west down into the Charred Vale, the scorched valley in western Stonetalon.
  3. Find the pass on the southern edge of the vale — it leads straight into Desolace.
  4. Turn east into the mountains right after the pass: that is where Nijel's Point stands. Grab the flight path so you can fly in next time.

Horde route

  1. Fly to Sun Rock Retreat in the Stonetalon Mountains. If you do not have it, walk there from the Barrens along the westbound road.
  2. Take the trail west up into the Charred Vale.
  3. Travel south through the vale to the pass into Desolace.
  4. Cross the zone to the south-west to reach the coast: Shadowprey Village sits by the sea in southern Desolace. On the way you can stop at Ghost Walker Post — it has quests but no flight master.
Совет

The walk from the pass to Shadowprey Village is long and crosses centaur lands. Stick to the roads and pick up the flight path as soon as you arrive — every route is mapped in the flight paths guide.

Entrances and things to know

  • Northern entrance — the pass on the south side of the Charred Vale. This is the main way in for both factions.
  • Southern entrance — the road from Feralas past the Twin Colossals. If you already have flight paths in Feralas, this route can be shorter; see how to get to Feralas.
  • Centaur. The centre and east of the zone belong to centaur tribes — Kolkar, Gelkis, Magram, and the Maraudine in the canyons near Maraudon. Until you earn the right reputation, they attack on sight.
  • Burning Blade. Cultists and demons hold Thunder Axe Fortress in the north and Mannoroc Coven in the south — plan your path around them.
  • No shortcuts. Vanilla 1.12.1 has no flying mounts or portals, and no ships call at Desolace — only your feet, your mount and flight paths.

Why go to Desolace

Desolace is a classic level 30–40 zone with long quest chains:

  • quests from Nijel's Point and Shadowprey Village plus the centaur war — the full order is in the Desolace leveling guide;
  • the Maraudon dungeon in the western canyons — how to find both entrances is covered in how to get to Maraudon;
  • the road south to Feralas once your character has grown.

More about the centaur and their tribes is on the centaur page.

FAQ

How do I get to Desolace the first time?

On foot. Alliance start at Stonetalon Peak, Horde at Sun Rock Retreat: both routes lead into the Charred Vale in western Stonetalon Mountains, and a pass at its southern edge opens into Desolace. The other option is to come north from Feralas.

Where are the flight paths in Desolace?

Alliance use Nijel's Point in the northern mountains, east of the Charred Vale pass. Horde use Shadowprey Village on the south-western coast. Ghost Walker Post in the middle of the zone has no flight master in 1.12.1.

Does Desolace border Thousand Needles or Mulgore?

No. Desolace only borders Stonetalon Mountains to the north and Feralas to the south. Mountains to the east cut it off from Mulgore, and the sea lies to the west.

What level is Desolace?

Desolace is roughly a level 30–40 zone. The entrance to the Maraudon dungeon lies in the western canyons, and groups usually head there towards the late 40s.
