Section: World & travel 6 min read Vanilla 1.12.1 · x5 Updated 14.10.2026

How to get to Elwynn Forest is a question asked by dwarves, gnomes and night elves who want to try the human starting zone, by players looking for Stormwind, and by Horde raiders heading for Goldshire. Elwynn Forest is the heart of the Kingdom of Stormwind, and every race has its own way here. Below are all the routes for the WoW x5 server (Vanilla 1.12.1).

Where Elwynn Forest Is

The forest lies in the northwest of the Eastern Kingdoms, right at the gates of Stormwind. Westfall borders it to the west, the Redridge Mountains to the east, and Duskwood begins across the river to the south. To the north the zone is closed off by the mountains that separate it from the Burning Steppes - there is no pass there. The recommended level is 1-10. A detailed description of the subzones is in the Elwynn Forest article.

Key landmarks: Northshire Abbey in Northshire Valley, where new humans appear; the village of Goldshire in the middle of the forest, where the roads from Stormwind and the abbey meet; the Tower of Azora and the Eastvale Logging Camp in the east near the Redridge border.

How to Get to Elwynn Forest as Alliance

Humans

Humans do not need to travel at all: a new character starts at Northshire Abbey. A road runs south out of the valley to Goldshire, and from there northwest to the gates of Stormwind.

Dwarves and Gnomes

The fastest way is the Deeprun Tram, which links Ironforge and Stormwind:

  1. In Ironforge, go to Tinker Town and find the tram tunnel entrance.
  2. Board a car - the ride is free and takes a couple of minutes.
  3. In Stormwind you arrive in the Dwarven District; walk through the city to the main gate and the Valley of Heroes.
  4. Beyond the gate the road leads southeast to Goldshire.

Night Elves

For a night elf the trip in 1.12 is the longest, because there is no direct boat from Auberdine to Stormwind:

  1. From Darnassus go down to Rut'theran Village and take the boat to Auberdine in Darkshore.
  2. In Auberdine switch to the boat to Menethil Harbor in the Wetlands.
  3. Follow the road southeast through the Wetlands and the Dun Algaz gorge into Loch Modan.
  4. Pass through the South Gate tunnel into Dun Morogh, then go to Ironforge and take the Deeprun Tram to Stormwind.

More about boats and crossings is in the travel guide.

How to Get to Elwynn Forest as Horde

For the Horde, Elwynn Forest is deep enemy territory, and players come here mostly for raids on Alliance towns. The shortest route:

  1. Take the zeppelin from Orgrimmar or Undercity to Grom'gol Base Camp in Stranglethorn Vale.
  2. Head north through the jungle into Duskwood, avoiding Darkshire and its guards.
  3. From Duskwood cross the river by bridge or by swimming - and you are in Elwynn Forest.

The nearest Horde flight path is Grom'gol. Keep in mind that Alliance guards attack Horde players on sight, and the patrols in Goldshire are much stronger than the local wildlife. Since patch 1.6, Horde characters who die in the forest, in Stormwind, in the Stockade or in the Deeprun Tram are sent to the neutral graveyard at the Eastvale Logging Camp.

Where the Entrances Are and How to Find Your Way

For most players the main entrance to the forest is the gate of Stormwind. If you arrive by gryphon, the flight master is in the city itself: in 1.12 there are no separate flight points in Goldshire or at the logging camp. From Westfall the western bridge leads across the river into the forest, from Duskwood the eastern bridge, and from Redridge the road past the Eastvale Logging Camp.

First of all, set your hearthstone at the Goldshire inn - that way you can return here from anywhere in the world.

Why Go to Elwynn Forest

For humans this is the starting zone: the full quest order is in the Elwynn Forest leveling guide, and a character's first steps are covered in the human starting guide. For dwarves, gnomes and night elves the forest offers fresh level 5-10 quests and quick access to Stormwind, home of the Stockade dungeon. To avoid long walks, discover the Stormwind flight path and read the flight paths guide.
