How to Reach Loch Modan in WoW 1.12.1
How to get to Loch Modan is a question for dwarves and gnomes who have outgrown Dun Morogh, and for anyone heading to Uldaman or the Wetlands. Loch Modan is a green mountain valley in Khaz Modan with a vast lake held back by the Stonewrought Dam. In patch 1.12 the lake is full - it was only drained in Cataclysm. Here are the Alliance and Horde routes for the WoW x5 server (Vanilla 1.12.1).

◆Where Loch Modan Is
Loch Modan lies in the Eastern Kingdoms, east of Dun Morogh. In the north the Dun Algaz tunnel connects it to the Wetlands, and in the south it borders the Badlands. The recommended level is 10-20. Subzones are described in the Loch Modan article.
Key landmarks:
- Thelsamar - a dwarven town on the western shore of the lake with the Stoutlager Inn, a flight master and vendors.
- The Loch - the heart of the zone, ringed by roads.
- Stonewrought Dam - the giant dam in the northeast.
- Algaz Station - a mountaineer outpost in the north, by the tunnel to the Wetlands.
- Ironband's Excavation Site and Mo'grosh Stronghold - in the east of the zone.

How to Get to Loch Modan as Alliance
Loch Modan borders Dun Morogh, so dwarves and gnomes simply walk in within a few minutes. Other races first need to reach Ironforge.
- Leave Ironforge through the main gate and follow the road down into the valley.
- Head east along the road through Kharanos to the eastern edge of Dun Morogh.
- At the fork, take the South Gate Pass tunnel - it is the closest to Thelsamar. The North Gate Pass tunnel is handier if you are going straight north to the Wetlands.
- After the tunnel, follow the road to Thelsamar and discover the flight path at the gryphon master Thorgrum Borrelson.
Humans from Stormwind reach Ironforge on the Deeprun Tram. Night elves sail from Auberdine to Menethil Harbor and walk south along the road through the Wetlands and the Dun Algaz tunnel - entering Loch Modan from the north. Once Thelsamar is discovered, you can fly there from Ironforge, Menethil Harbor and Refuge Pointe.
How to Get to Loch Modan as Horde
For the Horde, Loch Modan is hostile ground without a flight path, but it lies on the northern route into the Badlands.
- From Undercity, travel to Tarren Mill, then head east into the Arathi Highlands and discover the Hammerfall flight path.
- From Hammerfall, go south across the Thandol Span into the Wetlands.
- Follow the road south, avoiding Menethil Harbor, to the Dun Algaz tunnel.
- Go through the tunnel - at the exit you will be at Algaz Station, held by Alliance mountaineers. Be ready to run.
The second route is from the south: if you have already discovered Kargath in the Badlands, head north from there to the mountain pass. Details are in how to get to the Badlands, and the way to Hammerfall in how to get to the Arathi Highlands.
Where the Entrances Are and What to Watch For
- West - the North Gate and South Gate tunnels from Dun Morogh. The safest ways in for the Alliance.
- North - the Dun Algaz tunnel from the Wetlands. Dragonmaw orcs, hostile to both factions, hold the gorge itself - pass through quickly.
- South - the pass into the Badlands at the southern tip of the lake. Beyond it are level 35-45 mobs.
- Troggs are everywhere, especially in Stonesplinter Valley south of Thelsamar. Read more about them in the Troggs article.

Routes to Loch Modan: Summary Table
| Step | Alliance | Horde |
|---|---|---|
| Start | Ironforge | Undercity or Orgrimmar |
| Transport | On foot through Dun Morogh, later gryphon to Thelsamar | Bat or wind rider to Hammerfall |
| Zone entrance | South Gate or North Gate tunnel | Dun Algaz tunnel or the pass from the Badlands |
| Closest flight path | Thelsamar | Hammerfall or Kargath |
Set your hearthstone at the Thelsamar inn if you level in the zone or run Uldaman: the Alliance has no flight path closer to the Badlands.

◆Why Go to Loch Modan
Loch Modan is the classic second zone for dwarves and gnomes: quests against troggs, kobolds and Dark Iron dwarves, fishing on a huge lake and a first look at the Uldaman excavations. The quest order is in the Loch Modan leveling guide, and the way north is covered in the Wetlands leveling guide. To cut travel time, read the flight paths guide and the world travel guide.
