How to Reach Stonetalon Mountains as Alliance and Horde
How to get to Stonetalon Mountains is a question players of both factions run into somewhere between levels 15 and 30. Stonetalon Mountains is a mountain range in central Kalimdor with several ways in: a tunnel from Ashenvale, passes from the Barrens and roads from Desolace. Here is every route for the WoW x5 server (Vanilla 1.12.1).

◆Where Stonetalon Mountains Is
The mountains lie in central Kalimdor: Ashenvale is to the north and northeast, the Barrens to the east and Desolace to the south. In the northwest, among forested peaks, stands Stonetalon Peak, an Alliance outpost maintained by the druids of the Talon Den. In the centre, south of Mirkfallon Lake, is Sun Rock Retreat, the Horde base. In the northeast the Venture Company is clear-cutting the forest of Windshear Crag.
The recommended level is roughly 15–30. There are no dungeons or battlegrounds in the zone. Read more in the Stonetalon Mountains zone article.
How to Get There as Alliance
The classic Alliance route goes through Ashenvale and the Talondeep Path.
- From Menethil Harbor, or from Rut'theran Village below Darnassus, sail to Auberdine in Darkshore.
- Fly from Auberdine to Astranaar in Ashenvale.
- From Astranaar, head southwest to Mystral Lake. The entrance to the Talondeep Path is just west of it.
- Walk through the tunnel — it comes out in the northeast of Stonetalon Mountains, in Windshear Crag.
- Travel west and northwest to Stonetalon Peak and learn the flight path: it connects to Auberdine, Astranaar and Nijel's Point in Desolace.
How to Get There as Horde
- From Orgrimmar, fly to the Crossroads in the Barrens.
- Head west to the border between the Barrens and the mountains. Horde characters right at the border send players into Windshear Crag, and further southeast begins Webwinder Path, the main road leading deep into the zone towards Mirkfallon Lake.
- Follow the road up to Sun Rock Retreat and learn the flight path: in 1.12 it connects to Thunder Bluff, the Crossroads and Shadowprey Village in Desolace.
- Horde players in Ashenvale can also use the Talondeep Path — the tunnel is neutral and open to both factions.
Where the Entrance Is and How to Find Your Way
The Talondeep Path is a long, winding cave under the mountains. There are no friendly characters or hostile monsters inside, but there are plenty of dead ends, so stick to the main passage. The Ashenvale side is west of Mystral Lake; the mountain side is the northeastern corner of Windshear Crag.
Dangerous spots along the way: Windshear Crag, occupied by Venture Company goblins, the Charred Vale with its fire elementals and dangerous beasts, and the harpy nests. Players of the opposing faction are common here, since each side has quests against the other.
If this is your first trip through the Talondeep Path, learn the Astranaar (Alliance) or Splintertree Post (Horde) flight path in Ashenvale first — it makes the trip back much easier.

◆What to Do in Stonetalon Mountains
Quests for both factions revolve around driving out the Venture Company and restoring the Charred Vale, and the Horde also gets chains against the Grimtotem tribe. The full plan is in the Stonetalon Mountains levelling guide. From here it is easy to move south: Desolace is home to the Maraudon dungeon, and the Ashenvale levelling guide will help you prepare for the mountains.
