How to Reach Stranglethorn Vale in WoW 1.12.1

Section: World & travel 4 min read Vanilla 1.12.1 · x5 Updated 07.10.2026

How to get to Stranglethorn Vale is one of the most common questions for players at levels 30 to 45. Stranglethorn Vale is a huge jungle in the south of the Eastern Kingdoms, home to a goblin port, an arena and the Zul'Gurub raid. A road, zeppelins and a boat all lead here, and each faction has its own convenient route. Here are the routes on the WoW x5 server (Vanilla 1.12.1).

Where Stranglethorn Vale is

Stranglethorn Vale covers the whole south-west of the Eastern Kingdoms, south of Duskwood. In 1.12.1 it is one large zone with no north and south split: it runs from the Duskwood border down to the goblin town of Booty Bay at the southern tip. The recommended level is 30 to 45, and the north is noticeably easier than the south. More about the camps and troll ruins is in the Stranglethorn Vale article.

How to get to Stranglethorn Vale as Alliance

In patch 1.12 the Alliance has a single flight path in the vale, in neutral Booty Bay. Rebel Camp in the north offers quests but has no gryphons: its flight path was only added in patch 2.3.

  1. From Stormwind, take a gryphon to Darkshire in Duskwood.
  2. From Darkshire follow the main road west, then turn south. The road leads straight into northern Stranglethorn Vale.
  3. Just past the border, west of the road, is Rebel Camp, and a little further south is Nesingwary's Expedition.
  4. To unlock the flight path, follow the road through the whole vale south to Booty Bay. After that you can fly there directly from Stormwind, Darkshire or Westfall.

An alternative for characters in Kalimdor: the boat from Ratchet in the Barrens arrives in Booty Bay. Before the trip, the Duskwood leveling guide will help.

How to get to Stranglethorn Vale as Horde

The Horde has it easier: Grom'gol Base Camp on the western coast has a flight path, an inn and a zeppelin tower.

  1. In Orgrimmar or the Undercity, climb the zeppelin tower and take the flight to Grom'gol. Both capitals have a direct zeppelin.
  2. On arrival at Grom'gol, unlock the flight path and set your hearthstone at the innkeeper.
  3. From Grom'gol, wind riders fly to Booty Bay, to Stonard in the Swamp of Sorrows and to Kargath in the Badlands, but each destination has to be discovered first.
  4. You can also come by sea from Kalimdor: the boat from Ratchet docks in Booty Bay, and from there the road runs north to Grom'gol.

Where the entrance is and what to watch out for

  • From the north a road leads into the vale from Duskwood. You can also swim along the coast from Westfall, but it takes a long time.
  • Booty Bay is entered through a tunnel in the jaws of a giant shark. The town guards are neutral and attack anyone who assaults a player inside the town.
  • Stranglethorn Vale is one of the most dangerous PvP zones: ganks are especially common around Nesingwary's Expedition and on the road between Booty Bay and Grom'gol.
  • The Zul'Gurub raid sits in the north-eastern corner of the map. The detailed route is in the guide on how to get to Zul'Gurub.

Why go to Stranglethorn Vale

There are dozens of quests for levels 30 to 45, including the famous hunt The Green Hills of Stranglethorn. The Gurubashi Arena hosts PvP brawls for a treasure chest, and every Sunday there is a fishing tournament along the coast. The goblin town is covered in the Booty Bay guide, and the quest route in the Stranglethorn Vale leveling guide. All boats and zeppelins are explained in the world travel guide.
