How to Reach the Badlands in WoW 1.12.1
How to get to the Badlands is a question almost every level 35-45 character asks sooner or later: the zone holds the Uldaman dungeon, ore-rich hills and a key Horde flight hub. The Badlands are a dry, rocky wasteland in southeastern Khaz Modan, and each faction has its own way in. Here are both routes for the WoW x5 server (Vanilla 1.12.1).
Contents
◆Where the Badlands Are
The Badlands lie in the Eastern Kingdoms, on the southeastern edge of the Khaz Modan mountains. Only two land passes lead into the zone: from Loch Modan in the north and from Searing Gorge in the west. Mountains seal off every other side, and the zone cannot be reached from the sea. The recommended level is 35-45. A full overview of subzones, ogre camps and dig sites is in the Badlands article.
Key landmarks: the Horde fortress of Kargath in the west, the Uldaman dungeon in the north, the Dark Iron stronghold of Angor Fortress just south of Uldaman, and the elite Lethlor Ravine full of black dragons in the east.
How to Get to the Badlands as Alliance
For the Alliance this is the easy direction: the zone borders dwarven Loch Modan. The Alliance has no flight path inside the Badlands in 1.12.
- From Stormwind, travel to Ironforge by the Deeprun Tram or fly there by gryphon.
- From Ironforge, fly to Thelsamar in Loch Modan.
- From Thelsamar, head southeast towards the southern tip of the lake.
- In the middle of the southern mountain range there is a gap - it leads into the Badlands near The Maker's Terrace.
Thelsamar stays your closest flight master for the whole time you quest in the zone, so it is a good place to set your hearthstone.
How to Get to the Badlands as Horde
For the Horde the Badlands are one of the hardest zones of their level to reach: both entrances are far from Horde flight paths. The reward is worth it, though - once you discover Kargath you gain a vital link between the northern and southern halves of the continent.
Northern route (from Undercity):
- From Undercity, travel to Tarren Mill, then head east into the Arathi Highlands and discover the Hammerfall flight path.
- From Hammerfall, go south across the Thandol Span into the Wetlands. The Horde has no flight master there.
- Follow the road south and go through the Dun Algaz tunnels into Loch Modan. Alliance guards stand at the exit - be ready to run.
- Give Thelsamar a wide berth, go down to the southern shore of the lake and enter the Badlands through the mountain gap.
- Head south, then west along the mountains to Kargath and discover the flight path.
The southern route is longer and crosses level 50+ zones: from Grom'gol Base Camp through Duskwood and Redridge into Burning Steppes, then through Blackrock Mountain into Searing Gorge and east over the pass. Details are in our guide on how to get to Searing Gorge.
Where the Entrances Are and What to Watch For
- The Loch Modan pass is a break in the southern mountains right below the tip of the lake. On the map you can spot it by the road running south.
- The pass to Searing Gorge starts south of Kargath, on the western edge of the zone.
- If you die in the first half of the trip to Kargath, you return at the spirit healer near Loch Modan; in the second half, at the spirit healer south of Kargath.
- The Uldaman dungeon is entered in the north of the zone, through an excavation held by troggs. The way to the portal is covered in how to get to Uldaman.
Routes to the Badlands: Summary Table
| Step | Alliance | Horde |
|---|---|---|
| Start | Ironforge | Undercity or Orgrimmar |
| Transport | Gryphon to Thelsamar | Bat or wind rider to Hammerfall, later directly to Kargath |
| On foot | From Thelsamar south to the pass | Wetlands, Dun Algaz, Loch Modan |
| Closest flight path | Thelsamar | Kargath |
From Kargath, Horde wind riders fly to Undercity, Hammerfall, Stonard, Grom'gol Base Camp, Booty Bay, Thorium Point and Flame Crest. Discover this flight path as early as possible - it saves a lot of time in the south of the continent.
◆Why Go to the Badlands
The main reason is Uldaman and its quest chains, plus dense quest camps of ogres, troggs and Dark Iron dwarves. Quests in level order are listed in the Badlands leveling guide, and dungeon tactics are in the Uldaman guide. Miners will love the silver, gold and mithril veins, and the hills around Kargath are a good place to farm stone. To cut down on travel time, read the flight paths guide.
