How to Reach the Burning Steppes in WoW 1.12.1
How to get to Burning Steppes is a question every player asks after outgrowing Searing Gorge and looking for level 50–58 quests or the road to the Blackrock Mountain dungeons. Burning Steppes is a volcano-scorched zone in southern Khaz Modan, and there are two ways in. Below are the Alliance and Horde routes on the WoW x5 server (Vanilla 1.12.1).

◆Where Burning Steppes is located
Burning Steppes lies on the Eastern Kingdoms continent, between Redridge Mountains to the south and Searing Gorge to the north. The north-west of the zone is dominated by the volcano of Blackrock Mountain, which holds Blackrock Depths, Blackrock Spire, Molten Core and Blackwing Lair. The zone itself is meant for levels 50–58: it is ruled by Blackrock orcs, ogres and black dragons. Lore and points of interest are covered on the wiki page for Burning Steppes.
Main landmarks: Morgan's Vigil, the Alliance camp in the south-east; Flame Crest, a neutral camp with the Horde flight path in the north; and the Ruins of Thaurissan in the middle of the zone.
How to get there as Alliance
For the Alliance, Burning Steppes is the most accessible zone of its level, because the road runs straight from Redridge.
- Fly to Lakeshire in Redridge Mountains. If you do not have that flight path yet, walk there from Elwynn Forest.
- From Lakeshire take the road north into the mountains. The trail climbs and brings you into the south-eastern part of Burning Steppes.
- Morgan's Vigil stands right behind the pass. Learn the flight path from the gryphon master Borgus Stoutarm.
In 1.12, gryphons from Morgan's Vigil fly to Stormwind, Lakeshire, Thorium Point in Searing Gorge and Nethergarde Keep in the Blasted Lands. Dwarves and gnomes starting from Ironforge may prefer another route: fly to Thorium Point in Searing Gorge and walk south through Blackrock Mountain.
How to get there as Horde
The Horde has no flight paths in Redridge, so the main route comes from the north, through Blackrock Mountain.
- Fly to Kargath in the Badlands, the main Horde flight hub in the east of the continent.
- From Kargath head south along the western edge of the zone, where a narrow trail leads into Searing Gorge.
- In the gorge, learn the flight path at Thorium Point, then go south to the gates of Blackrock Mountain.
- Inside the mountain, cross the huge stone bridge over the lava and leave through the southern exit into Burning Steppes.
- Turn east towards Flame Crest and learn the Horde flight path.
Flame Crest connects to Stonard in the Swamp of Sorrows, Kargath and Thorium Point. A backup option is to walk from the Swamp of Sorrows through Redridge, but that is Alliance territory with guard outposts, so move carefully.
Where the entrance is and what to watch for
Burning Steppes has no gates and no attunement requirements; it is a regular open zone. Still, two things are worth knowing in advance:
- The Blackrock Mountain passage — the corridor between Searing Gorge and Burning Steppes itself is free of mobs, but the entrances to level 50–60 dungeons are right next to it. Stay near the edge of the bridge and do not fall into the lava.
- The Redridge border — powerful fire elementals walk right at the border. Level 20–30 characters who wander north from Redridge by accident should turn back.
Detailed navigation inside the mountain is covered in the guides on how to get to Blackrock Depths and how to get to Blackrock Spire.
Route table
| Route | Alliance | Horde |

| Closest way in on foot | Road from Lakeshire (Redridge) | Through Blackrock Mountain from Searing Gorge |
| Connected flights | Stormwind, Lakeshire, Thorium Point, Nethergarde Keep | Kargath, Stonard, Thorium Point |
| Danger on the way | Elementals at the zone border | Alliance territory in Redridge |
◆What to do in Burning Steppes
The zone is a comfortable place to level from 50 to 58: quests at Morgan's Vigil and Flame Crest, plus tasks against the Blackrock orcs and black dragons. A step-by-step levelling route is in the guide on Burning Steppes leveling. The zone is also rich in resources: Black Lotus grows in the hills, and you will find Dark Iron and thorium ore as well — see Black Lotus farming. On top of that, this is the closest zone to the raids; the way in is explained in the guide on how to get to Molten Core.
