How to Reach the Swamp of Sorrows in WoW 1.12.1
How to get to the Swamp of Sorrows is a common question for level 35-45 players and for anyone putting together a Sunken Temple group. The Swamp of Sorrows is a murky lowland in the southeastern Eastern Kingdoms, home to the Horde outpost of Stonard and the drowned Temple of Atal'Hakkar. Here are the Alliance and Horde routes for the WoW x5 server (Vanilla 1.12.1).

◆Where the Swamp of Sorrows Is
The Swamp of Sorrows lies in the southeastern Eastern Kingdoms: east of Deadwind Pass and north of the Blasted Lands. Mountains separate it from Redridge in the north, and the Forbidding Sea borders it to the east. The only standard land route in leads from Duskwood through Deadwind Pass. The recommended level is 35-45. Subzones and inhabitants are described in the Swamp of Sorrows article.
Key landmarks: the Horde outpost of Stonard in the middle of the zone, Splinterspear Junction on the western road, the draenei village of The Harborage in the western part of the swamp, and the Pool of Tears with the Sunken Temple in the east.
How to Get to the Swamp of Sorrows as Alliance
The Alliance has no flight path inside the Swamp of Sorrows in 1.12, but two nearby ones let you walk in without meeting dangerous mobs on the way.
- From Stormwind, fly by gryphon to Darkshire in Duskwood.
- From Darkshire, follow the road east into Deadwind Pass. Stay on the road: high-level mobs roam on both sides.
- At the end of the pass, in Sleeping Gorge, keep to the eastern road at the fork - it leads into the Swamp of Sorrows.
- Keep following the road to Splinterspear Junction and the center of the zone.
If you have already discovered the Nethergarde Keep flight path, you can fly there and walk north through the mountain pass into the southern part of the swamp. How to unlock that flight path is explained in how to get to the Blasted Lands.
How to Get to the Swamp of Sorrows as Horde
The Horde has a flight path at Stonard, but the first trip there is on foot through Alliance territory.
- In Orgrimmar or Undercity, take the zeppelin to Grom'gol Base Camp in Stranglethorn Vale.
- Follow the road north and turn east at the fork into Duskwood. Stay on the road - the jungle around it is full of level 30+ mobs.
- Skirt around Darkshire: Alliance guards attack Horde players.
- Head east through Deadwind Pass along the main road.
- In the Swamp of Sorrows, follow the road past Splinterspear Junction, take the southern road at the crossroads and go east, past the turn to the Blasted Lands, until you reach Stonard.
If you already have Kargath in the Badlands, simply fly from there to Stonard. Getting to Grom'gol is covered in how to get to Stranglethorn Vale.
Where the Entrances Are and What to Watch For
- The main entrance is from the west, out of Deadwind Pass. The second is from the south, through the pass from the Blasted Lands near Nethergarde Keep.
- There is a barely visible mountain trail from Redridge, south of Render's Valley, but it is awkward and easy to fall from - plan on the normal road.
- The road through the swamp runs barely above the water, with crocolisks and jaguars hunting nearby - do not leave it at low levels.
- The Sunken Temple entrance is in the ruins in the middle of the Pool of Tears. The way to the portal is described in how to get to the Sunken Temple.
Routes to the Swamp of Sorrows: Summary Table
| Step | Alliance | Horde |
|---|---|---|
| Start | Stormwind | Orgrimmar or Undercity |

| On foot | East through Deadwind Pass | Duskwood and Deadwind Pass |
| Closest flight path | Darkshire, Nethergarde Keep | Stonard |
From Stonard, Horde wind riders fly to Grom'gol Base Camp, Booty Bay, Kargath and Flame Crest. It is also the Horde flight path closest to the Blasted Lands.
◆Why Go to the Swamp of Sorrows
Quests in the swamp are few and spread across many levels, but some of them lead to the Sunken Temple - a dungeon for roughly levels 50-56 guarded by Ysera's green dragons. The full quest order is in the Swamp of Sorrows leveling guide, and temple tactics are in the Sunken Temple guide. Herbalists will appreciate Blindweed, which grows in only a few places. To save time on travel, read the flight paths guide.
