How to Reach the Blasted Lands in WoW 1.12.1
How to get to the Blasted Lands is a question every player asks around levels 45 to 55, when the stat potion quests become attractive or you simply want to see the legendary Dark Portal. The Blasted Lands are a red desert at the far south-eastern tip of the Eastern Kingdoms, and there is only one way in. Here is the route for both Alliance and Horde on the WoW x5 server (Vanilla 1.12.1).

◆Where the Blasted Lands are
The Blasted Lands sit at the southern end of the Eastern Kingdoms, directly south of the Swamp of Sorrows. Mountains and the sea close off every other side, so the zone has exactly one neighbour. The recommended level is 45 to 55. A full description of the zone, its ogre camps and demon lairs is in the Blasted Lands article.
The main landmark is the Dark Portal in the southern part of the map. In 1.12.1 it is inactive: the gate is there, but you cannot travel to Outland, which only arrived with The Burning Crusade. The history of the gate is covered on the Dark Portal page.
How to get to the Blasted Lands as Alliance
The Alliance has its own flight path inside the zone, at Nethergarde Keep near the entrance. The first time, though, you have to reach it on foot to unlock it.
- From Stormwind, take a gryphon to Darkshire in Duskwood.
- From Darkshire head east into Deadwind Pass. Keep to the northern edge of the pass, where there are fewer dangerous mobs.
- Once through the pass you are in the Swamp of Sorrows. Make for the middle of the southern border, where a pass cuts through the mountains.
- Beyond the pass the road is watched by Nethergarde Keep. Talk to the gryphon master and unlock the flight path.
From then on, simply fly from Stormwind straight to the keep. If you have not explored the region yet, check the Swamp of Sorrows leveling guide and hand in quests on the way.
How to get to the Blasted Lands as Horde
In patch 1.12 the Horde has no flight path in the Blasted Lands. The closest one is at Stonard in the Swamp of Sorrows, just a few minutes from the pass.
- In Orgrimmar or the Undercity, board the zeppelin to Grom'gol Base Camp in Stranglethorn Vale.
- If you already have the Stonard flight path, take a wind rider there. If not, follow the road north into Duskwood, then go east through Deadwind Pass into the Swamp of Sorrows.
- From Stonard, head to the southern border of the Swamp of Sorrows and the mountain pass.
- Walk past Nethergarde Keep: the Alliance guards are not flagged for PvP, but on a PvP realm you can easily run into players of the opposite faction here.
Set your hearthstone at Stonard, as it is the base for every trip into the zone.
Where the entrance is and what to watch out for
- There is a single entrance, the mountain pass from the Swamp of Sorrows. No other route into the zone exists in 1.12.1.
- The Blasted Lands have one proper road running north to south past the keep. Ogres and demons roam on both sides, and many of them are elites.
- In the west lies the Tainted Scar, a demon territory where the world boss Lord Kazzak spawns. Solo players should stay out.
Routes to the Blasted Lands: summary table
| Step | Alliance | Horde |
|---|---|---|
| Start | Stormwind | Orgrimmar or Undercity |
| Transport | Gryphon to Darkshire, later straight to Nethergarde Keep | Zeppelin to Grom'gol, wind rider to Stonard |
| On foot | Deadwind Pass and Swamp of Sorrows | From Stonard south to the pass |
| Nearest flight path | Nethergarde Keep | Stonard |
On WoW x5 you level quickly and often arrive in the Blasted Lands close to level 60. That is fine: the stat potion quests stay useful at max level.
◆Why go to the Blasted Lands
The main reason is the repeatable quests for potions that grant +25 to a single stat (R.O.I.D.S., Lung Juice Cocktail and others): they are brewed from parts of local beasts and are valued in raids. In addition, every mob in the zone can drop Draenethyst fragments, which a collector trades for gear. Quest chains and the best order to do them are in the Blasted Lands leveling guide, and life at the keep is described in the Nethergarde Keep guide. To save time on travel, read the flight paths guide.

FAQ
?Where is the entrance to the Blasted Lands?
The only entrance is a mountain pass on the southern border of the Swamp of Sorrows, close to the Horde outpost of Stonard. Right behind the pass the road is guarded by Nethergarde Keep.
?Can I go through the Dark Portal in 1.12.1?
No. In Vanilla 1.12.1 the Dark Portal stands in the south of the Blasted Lands but is inactive: Outland only became reachable with The Burning Crusade.
?Does the Horde have a flight path in the Blasted Lands?
No. In patch 1.12 the zone has only the Alliance flight path at Nethergarde Keep. The Horde should fly to Stonard in the Swamp of Sorrows and walk south.
?What level should I be for the Blasted Lands?
The zone is intended for roughly levels 45 to 55. Mobs hit hard and often roam in groups, so characters below level 45 should not linger.
