How to Reach Stonard in WoW Classic

Section: World & travel 6 min read Vanilla 1.12.1 · x5 Updated 15.10.2026

How to get to Stonard is a question every Horde character faces sooner or later: quests around levels 35–45 send you to the Swamp of Sorrows, yet there is no way to unlock the flight path in advance. Stonard is an old orcish stronghold in the southern swamp with a wind rider, an inn and trainers. On the WoW x5 server the trip is quick once you know the route, and below it is laid out step by step for both factions.

Where Stonard Is

Stonard sits in the southern part of the Swamp of Sorrows, on the eastern side of the Eastern Kingdoms, east of Deadwind Pass and north of the Blasted Lands. It is the only Horde settlement in the swamp: wooden towers, a great hall in the middle and a palisade among the bogs. In 1.12.1 only two roads lead into the swamp, one from Deadwind Pass in the west and one from the Blasted Lands in the south, which is why it is hard to find on the first try. For an overview of the zone and its inhabitants, read the Swamp of Sorrows article.

How to Get There as Horde

The shortest way is by air: if you already have Kargath or Grom'gol Base Camp, simply fly to Stonard. If you have no southern flight path yet, walk from Stranglethorn Vale:

  1. From Orgrimmar or the Undercity take the zeppelin to Grom'gol Base Camp in Stranglethorn Vale. The zeppelin towers are covered in the guide how to get to Grom'gol.
  2. From the camp follow the road northeast and then north, staying on the road: the jungle around it is full of beasts of level 30 and above.
  3. The road leads into Duskwood. At the crossroads turn east and stay on the main road.
  4. The road brings you to Darkshire, an Alliance town with guards. Skirt around it and head east into Deadwind Pass. This leg is described in detail in the guide how to get to Deadwind Pass.
  5. In the pass keep to the road heading east: high level monsters stand just off it. Through the Sleeping Gorge the road descends into the swamp.
  6. In the Swamp of Sorrows follow the road east. Past Splinterspear Junction take the southern road and continue east past the turn to the Blasted Lands; it leads straight into Stonard. Pick up the flight path.

The overall route to the zone is also covered in the guide how to get to the Swamp of Sorrows.

How to Get There as Alliance

For the Alliance Stonard is an enemy stronghold with elite guards, and there is no reason to walk in. Alliance characters enter the swamp through the same western entrance: from Darkshire along the eastern road through Deadwind Pass. The nearest Alliance flight paths are Darkshire in Duskwood and Nethergarde Keep in the Blasted Lands; the way to the latter is described in the guide how to get to the Blasted Lands. On a PvP realm the roads around Stonard are often patrolled by Horde players, and skirmish tactics are covered in the world PvP guide.

What Stonard Offers

  • Flight path — the wind rider master Breyk. From here you can fly to Kargath, Grom'gol Base Camp, Booty Bay and Flame Crest.
  • Inn — Innkeeper Karakul. Set your hearthstone here if you are heading into the Sunken Temple.
  • Trainers — in 1.12.1 Stonard has a shaman trainer and the alchemy trainer Rogvar.
  • Quests — Dispatch Commander Ruag runs the outpost, and the warlock Fel'zerul starts the chain that leads to the Pool of Tears and the Temple of Atal'Hakkar.
  • Services — vendors, a stable master, a mailbox and an anvil.

What to Do Nearby

The main reason to visit Stonard is the Temple of Atal'Hakkar dungeon, whose entrance is hidden under the water of the Pool of Tears in the northeast of the swamp; the route is in the guide how to get to the Sunken Temple. The swamp quests and the order to do them in are collected in the Swamp of Sorrows leveling guide. From Stonard it is also easy to head south into the Blasted Lands and come back to the inn afterwards. Tips on roads, zeppelins and the hearthstone are in the article travelling across Azeroth.
