The Stonetalon Mountains are a forested highland in western Kalimdor, tuned for 15–27. Pine slopes, Venture Co. goblin logging in the Charred Vale and harpies wheeling over the peaks. A bridge zone between the Barrens, Ashenvale and Desolace with dense quest hubs for both factions.

Level range and how to get there

The recommended range is level 15–27. The Horde holds Sun Rock Retreat in the south; the Alliance holds Stonetalon Peak in the west. You enter from the Barrens to the east, Ashenvale to the north, and Desolace to the south.

Quest hubs and chains

Key spots: Sun Rock Retreat and Stonetalon Peak — faction bases; the Charred Vale in the west — goblin logging and elementals; the Grimtotem camp — hostile tauren; and Windshear Crag — kobolds and goblins. Grab a batch of base quests and clear the nearby camps.

Elites

Elite harpy matriarchs and Charred Vale goblin foremen appear across the zone. A few quests lead to elite cave targets — bring a partner. There are no big elite bosses here, but harpy and goblin patrols hit hard at low levels.

Nearby dungeons

There is no dungeon inside the Stonetalon Mountains. The nearest instances are the Wailing Caverns (15–25) in the Barrens to the east and Maraudon in Desolace to the south (30–45, a bit later). Stonetalon pairs neatly with Wailing Caverns runs at the same levels.

Tips for the x5 server

On x5 the 15–27 range flies by — stick to the faction base quest chains.
Pair the zone with Wailing Caverns (15–25) runs in the neighbouring Barrens.
The Charred Vale is full of earth elementals that drop stones for engineering.
Gather copper and tin along the slopes — a perfect mining starter zone.
Beware harpies on the peaks — they fly in packs and finish you off easily.

Where to go next

By 27 move to Thousand Needles, Desolace or back to the Barrens and Stranglethorn. From here the path opens to Feralas and Stranglethorn at 30+.
