Transformation items in WoW Classic change your character model: you become a pirate, a ninja, an ogre, a skeleton or a member of an enemy race. In 1.12.1 on the WoW x5 server they are mostly for fun, with a couple of exceptions where the disguise opens a path in a dungeon or helps in combat.

What they are and why you want them

A transformation is a timed effect on your character. It does not change your faction, name or stats, but it changes your appearance, animations and some emotes. There is no Toy Box in 1.12.1, so all of these items take bag space; the overview of every category lives in the hub fun items in WoW Classic.

Savory Deviate Delight

The most famous transformation of the era is Savory Deviate Delight. When eaten it triggers one of two effects for 60 minutes: Flip Out turns you into a ninja dressed in black, Yaaarrrr turns you into a pirate. The other early effects were removed in patch 1.7.

How to get transformation items: step by step

Savory Deviate Delight. Fish Deviate Fish in the oases of the Barrens and at Wailing Caverns, buy Mild Spices and cook the dish.
Elixir. Complete the goblin's quest in Gadgetzan — details on the Noggenfogger Elixir page.
Orb. Look for the Orb of Deception on the Auction House: it is a rare world drop.
Ogre. In the north wing of Dire Maul find the chained goblin Knot Thimblejack and bring him runecloth, leather, thread and Ogre Tannin.
Holidays. Collect Treat Bags from innkeepers during Hallow's End and the snowman kit during the Feast of Winter Veil.

Other transformations in 1.12.1

Noggenfogger Elixir randomly turns you into a skeleton, shrinks you or gives you slow fall. Orb of Deception is a level 54 trinket: the look of a race from the opposing faction for 5 minutes, 30 minute cooldown.

Gordok Ogre Suit turns you into a Gordok ogre for 10 minutes. Without it you cannot get past the guard captain during a tribute run; see Dire Maul tribute buffs. The suit is a quest reward, and high level tailors and leatherworkers can learn to make it themselves.

Hallowed Wands come from Treat Bags during Hallow's End. Each wand puts a pirate, ninja, leper gnome, skeleton, ghost, bat or wisp costume on a party member, the Random wand picks one for you; each has 5 charges.

Winter Veil Disguise Kit turns you into a snowman and uses up a Snowball. Elixir of Giant Growth is brewed by alchemists from the same Deviate Fish — bigger size and +8 Strength for 2 minutes. The engineers' Discombobulator Ray turns a target into a leper gnome for 12 seconds, which is a combat trick. The quest item Dartol's Rod of Transformation turns an Alliance character into a furbolg for 3 minutes during an Ashenvale quest.

Tips

Druids and shamans lose the Savory Deviate Delight effect when they change form — shift first, then eat.
The Orb of Deception occupies a trinket slot, so swap your combat trinket back in before a raid.
Savory Deviate Delight does not bind, so it makes a nice gift and sells well on the Auction House.
For holiday group photos collect different wands in advance — the Random wand drops more often than the others.

FAQ

What does Savory Deviate Delight do?

It randomly applies one of two 60 minute transformations: Flip Out, a ninja dressed in black, or Yaaarrrr, a pirate. The other early effects were removed in patch 1.7 and do not exist in 1.12.1.

Where do I fish Deviate Fish?

In the Barrens: the Forgotten Pools, Lushwater Oasis and the Stagnant Oasis, plus the waters at the entrance and inside Wailing Caverns. The second reagent is Mild Spices, sold by cooking supply vendors.

Can a transformation fool enemy players?

Hardly. The Orb of Deception only changes your model: your name, guild and faction colour stay the same, so guards and enemy players still see you as hostile. The exception is the Gordok Ogre Suit, which exists precisely to fool an NPC in Dire Maul.

Which transformation can I put on a friend?

The Hallowed Wands from Hallow’s End put a costume on a targeted party member and have 5 charges. The Discombobulator Ray also affects a target, but it is a combat gadget rather than a joke.
