Weightstones for Blunt Weapons in WoW 1.12
A weightstone is a blacksmithing consumable that increases the damage of a blunt weapon for 30 minutes. It is the direct counterpart of sharpening stones, but for maces, staves and fist weapons. On the WoW x5 server weightstones remain the cheapest way to add damage for a warrior, paladin, shaman or a staff-wielding druid.

◆What a weightstone does in 1.12.1
A weightstone applies a temporary enhancement to the weapon: a flat bonus to the damage of every hit for 30 minutes. According to our server database all five stones use the same spell, Enhance Blunt Weapon I to V, with a duration of 1800 seconds. Only blunt item subclasses qualify: one-handed and two-handed maces, staves and fist weapons. Swords, axes, daggers and polearms need sharpening stones instead.
All weightstones: bonuses, skill and reagents
| Name | Skill to craft | Bonus | Reagents | Recipe source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rough Weightstone | 1 | +2 damage, 30 min | Rough Stone, Linen Cloth | learned with the profession |
| Coarse Weightstone | 65 | +3 damage, 30 min, lvl 5 | Coarse Stone, Wool Cloth | any blacksmithing trainer |
| Heavy Weightstone | 125 | +4 damage, 30 min, lvl 15 | Heavy Stone, Wool Cloth | blacksmithing trainers |
| Solid Weightstone | 200 | +6 damage, 30 min, lvl 25 | Solid Stone, Silk Cloth | trainers in Ironforge, Orgrimmar, Booty Bay |
| Dense Weightstone | 250 | +8 damage, 30 min, lvl 35 | Dense Stone, Runecloth | Brikk Keencraft, Booty Bay |
Each recipe takes exactly one stone and one piece of cloth. Stones come from mining, so a blacksmith is best paired with mining. Runecloth for the Dense Weightstone drops from high-level humanoids, and the best routes are collected in the runecloth farming guide.

How to craft and apply a weightstone
- Learn Blacksmithing from a trainer and raise the skill to the required level; the full plan is in the blacksmithing guide.
- Buy the recipe from a trainer: Coarse at 65, Heavy at 125, Solid at 200, Dense at 250.
- Gather the stone and cloth, stand next to an anvil and craft the weightstone from the profession window.
- Click the weightstone, then the weapon in your character panel. Applying takes a few seconds and is interrupted by movement.
- Watch the timer: after 30 minutes the bonus fades, so raiders refresh the stone before each boss.

◆Compatibility with enchants and other enhancements
A weightstone is a temporary enhancement and does not use the permanent enchant slot. A mace with Crusader from the weapon enchants list can still take a weightstone. Only one temporary effect can sit on a weapon at a time: a new stone, oil or poison replaces the previous one.
Do not confuse weightstones with the Iron Counterweight. It is also a blacksmithing product but works differently: a permanent enhancement for a two-handed sword, mace, axe or polearm that makes it 3% faster. In the database it is a permanent enchant, so it replaces a normal weapon enchant, and only a blacksmith with skill 165 can attach it. The plans are a rare world drop.
Craftsman's Writ: Dense Weightstone
In 1.12 the Dense Weightstone has a second role. An Argent Dawn Valor Token is handed to Dispatch Commander Metz at Light's Hope Chapel through the quests They Call Me The Rooster and Craftsman's Writ. The reward is a Sealed Craftsman's Writ, which may contain Craftsman's Writ - Dense Weightstone. That quest asks for 120 Dense Weightstones and is turned in to Packmaster Stonebruiser of the Brotherhood of the Light. The reward is Argent Dawn reputation and an insignia of your choice.

Usage: leveling, raids and PvP
- Leveling. Heavy and Solid Weightstones noticeably speed up killing mobs for a paladin or shaman with a two-handed mace. The cost is one stone and one piece of cloth.
- Raids. The Dense Weightstone is the standard consumable for tanks and mace users. Compare it with the Consecrated Sharpening Stone and the Elemental Sharpening Stone, which also work on blunt weapons.
- PvP. Plus 8 damage is especially valuable on slow two-handed maces: the bonus is added to every hit, including instant attacks.
Slow weapons benefit from a weightstone more than fast ones, because the bonus is fixed per hit rather than per second. For a tank with a fast one-handed mace an Elemental Sharpening Stone with its critical strike bonus is often better.
