Bank slots in WoW Classic are your character's personal storage, available at any banker. In Vanilla 1.12.1 the bank gives you 24 free slots plus 6 bag slots bought with gold. On the WoW x5 server items pile up fast, so it pays to expand the bank as soon as your wallet allows.

How the bank works in 1.12.1

The bank is shared across locations: anything you deposit in Stormwind can be withdrawn in Ironforge or Booty Bay. One character's bank is not visible to your other characters; items move between them by mail.

  • 24 slots are free from level 1.
  • 6 bag slots are purchased one at a time, each more expensive than the last.
  • Any bag fits into a bank slot, including special bags such as soul shard bags.
  • You cannot store money in the bank — only items.

The first three slots are cheap, so buy them around level 20–30. The fourth and fifth are usually bought closer to level 40–50, once you start stockpiling reagents. The sixth slot at 100 gold makes sense if you do not keep a bank alt.

How to buy a slot and expand the bank

  1. Find a banker in a capital or neutral town and open the bank window.
  2. Click the purchase slot button at the bottom of the window and confirm the payment.
  3. Drag an empty bag from your inventory into the new slot.
  4. Over time, replace small bags with larger ones — the bank grows without paying for more slots.

For which bags to use, check the biggest bags ranking: 14–16 slot bags are usually enough for the bank.

Where to find a bank

Alliance: Stormwind, Ironforge, Darnassus.

Horde: Orgrimmar, Thunder Bluff, Undercity.

Neutral banks: Booty Bay, Gadgetzan, Ratchet and Everlook. Their bankers serve both factions, which is handy while travelling — see the Booty Bay guide and the Gadgetzan guide. Bankers of the opposing faction will not talk to you.

It is convenient to set your Hearthstone at an inn close to the bank and the Auction House, so you can unload your bags right after farming. Travel tips are in Hearthstone and travel.

Tips: what to keep in the bank

  • Swap sets: a second armor set (for example fire resistance), fishing gear, holiday items.
  • Profession reagents: cloth, leather, ore you will need later. Sell surplus on the Auction House.
  • Keys and quest items you do not want to throw away.
  • Bank alt. When 120 slots are not enough, create a separate storage character and mail items to it.
  • Addons. OneBag and OneBank merge the bank window into a single grid.

Yes. Goblin bankers work in Booty Bay, Gadgetzan, Ratchet and Everlook. The bank is shared: items stored in one city are available in all others.

Can I store gold in the bank?

No. The Vanilla bank stores only items and bags. Money stays on the character, and spare gold can be mailed to a bank alt.
