WoW Classic 1.12.1 Junkboxes and Pick Pocket Explained

Section: Lore & bestiary 4 min read Vanilla 1.12.1 · x5 Updated 26.10.2026

Junkboxes are locked boxes that a rogue pulls out of mob pockets with Pick Pocket. They never drop from kills — they can only be stolen. On WoW x5 junkboxes are a steady source of silver, potions and poison reagents, and Heavy Junkboxes also earn reputation with the Ravenholdt assassins' guild.

Pick Pocket: how it works

Pick Pocket is available to rogues from level 4 and only works from stealth at melee range. A successful attempt opens a loot window with coins and, with luck, an item; a failure reveals you and the mob attacks. Each mob can be pickpocketed once — a second try gives nothing — and pocket loot is extra on top of the normal corpse loot, so the group loses nothing. Since patch 1.12 you can even pick the pockets of a target that is in combat, as long as you stay stealthed. For moving around unseen see the rogue stealth guide.

Pockets are found mostly on humanoids; according to our server database some undead and demons also carry junkboxes. Beasts are usually empty.

All junkbox types

A junkbox is opened with the same Lockpicking skill as lockboxes, but vendors do not buy junkboxes — you have to open them. Mob levels and coin amounts come from our server database.

The average chance to get a junkbox from a suitable mob ranges from 9% (Heavy) to 20% (Battered). With a skill cap of 5 points per level a rogue can open a Heavy Junkbox from level 50 — exactly when they start finding them. How to level the skill is covered in the lockpicking guide.

What junkboxes contain

Our server's loot tables:

  • coins — always, amounts in the table above;
  • Battered Junkbox: Small Pocket Watch (11%), Healing Potion (10%), occasional gems;
  • Worn, Sturdy and Heavy: Blinding Powder and Flash Powder in stacks of 2–5, healing potions of the matching tier (up to Major Healing Potion), and poison reagents — Deathweed, Dust of Decay, Essence of Pain or Essence of Agony;
  • about 1% — a green ring or necklace and, separately, about 1% — a recipe (patterns, plans, enchanting formulas);
  • hundredths of a percent — rare weapons: Assassin's Blade and Blackfang (Battered), Vendetta (Worn), Gut Ripper and Widowmaker (Sturdy), Shadowblade and Teebu's Blazing Longsword (Heavy).

The powders are reagents for Blind and Vanish, and the herbs and essences are needed for rogue poisons, so junkboxes partly pay for the class consumables.

Where to farm junkboxes

Good spots are dense packs of humanoids of the right level:

  • Worn (30–42): the Syndicate and Crushridge ogres in the Alterac Mountains, Witherbark trolls in the Arathi Highlands, the Scarlet Monastery;
  • Sturdy (40–55): Southsea pirates in Tanaris, Spitelash naga in Azshara, Jadefire satyrs in Felwood;
  • Heavy (50–61): the Scarlet Crusade in the Plaguelands, the Anvilrage and Shadowforge dwarves in Blackrock Depths, the skeletons of Stratholme.

Junkboxes and Ravenholdt reputation

Our server database has a repeatable rogue-only quest, Junkboxes Needed: from level 50 Fahrad, the Grand Master Rogue at Ravenholdt Manor, accepts 5 Heavy Junkboxes. The reward is +75 reputation with Ravenholdt, −75 with the Syndicate and a Dusksteel Throwing Knife. Other ways to raise your standing are in the Ravenholdt reputation guide.

Important: you must hand in unopened junkboxes, so set five aside before you travel to the Alterac Mountains.

FAQ

How do I get a junkbox in WoW Classic?

Junkboxes only come from Pick Pocket: a stealthed rogue uses the ability on a mob, most often a humanoid. Killing the mob never gives a junkbox.

What Lockpicking skill does a Heavy Junkbox need?

A Heavy Junkbox needs 250 Lockpicking, a Sturdy one 175, a Worn one 70 and a Battered one 1. A rogue's skill cap is five points per level, so the Heavy Junkbox can be opened from level 50.

What drops from junkboxes?

Always a few coins: from 25 copper in a Battered box to 3–6 silver in a Heavy one. Healing potions, Blinding Powder, Flash Powder and poison reagents are common, green rings and recipes are rarer, rare weapons are very rare.

Do junkboxes give Ravenholdt reputation?

Yes. From level 50 a rogue can hand 5 Heavy Junkboxes to Fahrad at Ravenholdt Manor in the repeatable quest Junkboxes Needed: +75 Ravenholdt and −75 Syndicate reputation per turn-in.
