A zombie is dangerous not alone but as a carrier of plague: anyone it kills may rise in turn. The Scourge wins not by strength but by contagion.
What Zombies Are
A zombie is a recently dead person raised by the plague right where they fell. It shambles and stumbles, reaches for the living, and barely remembers itself. There is no mind, only a dim hunger and a foreign will driving it onward.
Unlike the trained ghouls, a zombie is clumsy and weak. Its strength lies in numbers and in the plague: where a zombie has passed, new corpses rise, and the mob grows on its own.
The Plague of Undeath and the Fall of Lordaeron
The Lich King did not conquer Lordaeron by the sword — he poisoned it. Through tainted grain the plague spread across the villages: whoever ate it died and rose a zombie. So the Scourge turned whole cities without losing a single soldier in open battle.
It was this slaughter that brought Arthas to Stratholme, where he cut down the infected townsfolk before the plague could turn them. So began his fall and the birth of the future Lich King.
Zombies in WoW Classic
In the Vanilla era zombies roam the Western and Eastern Plaguelands, among the ruins of Stratholme and around Scholomance. Many still wear scraps of peasant clothing — a mute reproach for what the Scourge did to a peaceful land.
For a player a zombie is a weak but numerous enemy, behind whom looms the full might of the undead army: skeletons, liches, and abominations.
