Liches are the most powerful sentient undead of the Scourge: mages who traded life for eternal command of dark magic. They command the lesser undead, wield frost spells and keep their soul in a special vessel — the phylactery. The greatest of them, the Lich King himself, rules the whole Scourge, and the lich Kel'Thuzad is the final boss of Naxxramas in WoW Classic.
Killing a lich in battle is not enough: while its phylactery is intact, its spirit will rise again. That is why liches are so hard to destroy for good.
Who are the liches
A lich is a necromancer or mage who willingly embraced undeath for immortality and power. Most often liches were spellcasters who served the Scourge: as a reward for loyalty the Lich King granted them an eternal afterlife.
Outwardly a lich is a withered skeleton wreathed in dark magic, with burning eyes. Unlike the mindless ghouls, a lich retains the full mind, memory and magical power of its former life — and at times surpasses it.
The phylactery and frost magic
The secret of a lich's immortality is the phylactery: an enchanted vessel holding its soul. While the phylactery is intact, a lich's destroyed body reforms anew. To lay a lich to rest forever, one must find and shatter this vessel.
The liches' favorite weapon is the magic of ice and shadow: frostbolts, chains of cold, necrotic blasts. This bond with frost is no accident: the power of the whole Scourge flows from the icy throne of the Lich King in the far north.
Kel'Thuzad and other liches
The most famous lich of the Vanilla era is Kel'Thuzad. In life he was a mage of Dalaran, but he betrayed his brethren, founded the Cult of the Damned and summoned Archimonde into Lordaeron. For his loyalty the Lich King raised him as a lich in the necropolis of Naxxramas, where he became the raid's final boss.
Kel'Thuzad is the model of the lich's path: from an ambitious mortal mage to an immortal commander of the army of the dead.
