Necromancers are the dark mages of the Scourge, masters of the forbidden art of raising the dead. They are the Lich King's mortal hand: where necromancers pass, the battlefield rises again — as undead. Many were once humans who sold their souls to the Cult of the Damned.
What Necromancers Are
A necromancer is a spellcaster whose craft is the defilement of death. He calls shadow, spreads plague and disease, but his greatest gift is raising the fallen. With a wave of his staff he turns heaps of corpses into a marching army, and a living foe into a future servant.
Most Scourge necromancers came from humans: sorcerers seduced by the promise of power over death itself. By joining the Cult of the Damned, they renounced life and became conduits for the will of the Lich King.
Role in the Scourge
Necromancers are the engine of the Scourge. Without them the undead horde would never replenish: they raise the ghouls, skeletons, and geists and drive them into battle. Above them stand the immortal liches — the same necromancers, but who sealed their soul in a phylactery for eternal power.
This hunger for power at the cost of the soul links necromancers to the warlocks who serve the Burning Legion: both walk one dark road, only their gods differ.
Necromancers in WoW Classic
In the Vanilla era the chief forge of dark arts is Scholomance in the Eastern Plaguelands, where the Cult of the Damned trains new necromancers under Darkmaster Gandling. They appear across the Plaguelands, in Stratholme, and in the halls of Naxxramas.
For a player a necromancer is a priority target: while he lives the battle never ends, for the fallen rise again and again.
