Naga are serpentine sea creatures that were once the proud Highborne night elves. After the Sundering they were swallowed by the deep and transformed into monsters serving their mistress, Queen Azshara. The naga are not rank-and-file mobs but tragic descendants of the elven nobility. Their story is bound directly to the War of the Ancients and the fall of the Well of Eternity.
Who are the naga
Naga are amphibious beings with a serpentine lower body, scales, claws and, for many, several arms. Female naga are usually slender and hauntingly beautiful (sirens and witches), while males are transformed into huge, muscular warriors.
They wield ancient magic, remember a lost age, and harbor hatred for those who remained on land. Naga breathe underwater and rule the depths near the sunken ruins of their former homeland.
The curse of the Highborne
In ancient times the Highborne were the courtly nobility of Queen Azshara and the finest sorcerers of the night elves, drawing power from the Well of Eternity. Their pride and lust for power led to the War of the Ancients and the invasion of the Burning Legion.
When the Well exploded and the Sundering struck, Azshara's palace collapsed to the floor of the new sea. But the queen and her retinue did not perish: a dark power reshaped them into naga — immortal serpentine beings, forever loyal to their mistress in the depths.
Naga in the Azeroth of the Vanilla era
In the WoW Classic era the naga have not yet emerged from the sea en masse — their full invasion comes later. Yet scouting parties and lone naga already appear on the coasts:
