The frozen north

Northrend is a land of permafrost: glaciers, tundra and snowbound ridges. Here the cold kills faster than any blade, and beneath the snow lie the ruins of Azeroth's ancient civilizations.

Ancient dwellers

Deep beneath Northrend lies the underground realm of the nerubians — a spider-like race whose empire, Azjol-Nerub, fell to the Scourge. Their necropolises and crypts became the pattern for the undead's flying fortresses.

Stronghold of the Scourge

Atop the highest glacier of Icecrown stands the Frozen Throne, which imprisons the spirit of Ner'zhul, the first Lich King. From here his will commands the whole Scourge.

Link to Naxxramas

It was from Northrend that Kel'Thuzad raised the flying necropolis Naxxramas. In the Vanilla era this fortress looms over the Eastern Plaguelands — a direct threat out of the frozen north.

Northrend in the Vanilla era

The continent itself is inaccessible to players in classic WoW — it opens only later. Yet its shadow lies across all Vanilla lore: every creature of the Scourge in Lordaeron serves a will that flows from Northrend.

Why this matters

Realizing that the source of the Scourge is distant Northrend reveals the scale of the threat Vanilla heroes face in Naxxramas and the Plaguelands.
