Riding Skill: Trainers, Prices and Mounts
In Vanilla a mount is not cosmetic, it is the single biggest mobility upgrade. It takes two purchases: the riding skill from a trainer and the mount itself from a vendor. Here is the order, the prices and where both stand.
Contents
The two skill tiers
| Level | Skill | Speed | Training | Mount | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 40 | Apprentice Riding, 75 | +60% | about 20 gold | about 80 gold | about 100 gold |
| 60 | Journeyman Riding, 150 | +100% | about 600 gold | about 1000 gold | about 1600 gold |
Reputation discounts apply at your own faction's vendors: 5% friendly, 10% honored, 15% revered, 20% exalted. At exalted the level 40 package lands near 80 gold and the epic near 1280.
◆Racial trainers and vendors
- Human — Eastvale Logging Camp in Elwynn Forest: trainer Randal Hunter, horses from Katie Hunter.
- Dwarf and gnome — Amberstill Ranch in Dun Morogh: rams from Veron Amberstill, trainer alongside.
- Night elf — Craftsmen's Terrace in Darnassus: trainer Lelanai, sabers from Alassin.
- Orc and troll — Valley of Honor in Orgrimmar (wolves from Ogunaro Wolfrunner) and Sen'jin Village in Durotar for raptors.
- Tauren — Bloodhoof Village in Mulgore: kodos and trainer on site.
- Undead — Brill in Tirisfal Glades: skeletal mounts from Zachariah Post.
Full model and source breakdown sits in the mounts guide, split by faction into Alliance mounts and Horde mounts.
Class mounts need no riding skill
Paladins and warlocks get their mount from a spell rather than a purchase, and the riding skill is not required:
- Warlock — Felsteed at 30, the Dreadsteed at 60 via a ritual chain.
- Paladin — Warhorse at 40, the Charger at 60 via a quest.

◆Funding it on x5
On x5 rates levels outrun income, and gold is often short at 40. What works:
- Gold farming and gathering routes via herbalism.
- Auction house flipping.
- Saving on training: skip junk ranks, see skill training costs.
Save for skill and mount together. Buying the skill alone means 20 gold spent and still walking; the vendor usually stands two steps from the trainer.

FAQ
?At what level can I get a mount
A normal mount is available at level 40 and an epic one at level 60. Below 40 no amount of gold buys a mount; the only exception is the class summoning spells.
?How much does a level 40 mount cost
Roughly 100 gold: about 20 gold for the riding skill itself from a trainer and about 80 gold for the mount from a vendor. At maximum capital reputation it comes to around 80 gold total.
?How much is an epic mount
Around 1600 gold: about 600 for journeyman riding and about 1000 for the mount. Exalted reputation brings the total down to roughly 1280 gold.
?Can I buy another race's mount
Yes, but it requires exalted reputation with that race. Without it the vendor only sells to members of their own people.
