Sound Gone or Crackling in WoW 1.12.1: Audio Setup
Vanilla WoW Classic 1.12 · x5 realm · wowx5.ruIf WoW lost sound, it mutes when minimizing or it crackles, almost everything is fixed by the in-game audio settings and a fresh driver. Let's go in order.
Step 1: check in-game sound settings
Open Menu → Settings → Sound and check:
- the Enable Sound checkbox;
- Master / Music / Sound / Ambience sliders are not at zero;
- the right Sound Channels (not «minimum»).
Step 2: enable background sound
If the sound drops when you minimize — turn on «Enable Sound in Background». Music and effects will keep playing while the window is minimized.
Step 3: system output device
The 2006 client uses the system default device. If you switched headphones or speakers after launching the game — restart WoW. In Windows sound settings verify the «Default device» is what you actually listen to.
Step 4: remove crackle and stutter
Crackle and stutter almost always come from hardware sound and EAX:
| Setting | Action |
|---|---|
| Enable Hardware Sound | Disable |
| EAX | Disable |
| Sound Channels | Lower (32 → 24) |
| Audio driver | Update from vendor site |
Step 5: reset sound settings
If nothing helped, close the game and delete Config.wtf in the WTF folder (or the lines starting with SET Sound...). Sound settings return to factory — set them again.
Deleting the whole Config.wtf also resets the realmlist. Set the address again afterwards.
FAQ
Why does WoW sound stop when I minimize the game?
By default the client mutes sound when it loses focus. In Sound settings enable «Enable Sound in Background Modus» and music and effects will keep playing while the window is minimized.
There is no sound in game at all, though the system works. What do I do?
Open Settings → Sound and make sure Enable Sound is checked and the volume sliders are not at zero. If that fails, verify Windows has the right speakers or headset set as the default device.
Sound crackles and stutters. How do I fix it?
Usually hardware sound and EAX are to blame. In sound settings disable Enable Hardware Sound and EAX, lower the number of sound channels, then update your motherboard or sound card audio driver.
