The War of the Shifting Sands was a conflict that took place roughly 1,000 years before the First War. From the underground city of Ahn'Qiraj poured hordes of insectoid qiraji, driven by the will of the Old God C'Thun. It is this war that ties directly to the Ahn'Qiraj raid in WoW Classic.

Invasion from beneath the sands
The Old God C'Thun, imprisoned by the titans beneath the desert, bred underground a race of qiraji — intelligent insect warriors. From their capital Ahn'Qiraj they spilled into Silithus, destroying all living things. Their numbers seemed endless and their fanaticism unbreakable.
Night elves and bronze dragons
The night elf general Fandral Staghelm rose to defend Kalimdor. The war was brutal: in one battle Fandral's son Valstann died — a loss that hardened the druid's heart forever. The turning point came when the bronze dragonflight, led by Anachronos and the other Aspects, came to the elves' aid.

In the present the qiraji stirred again, and the seal weakened. The server event to open the gates of Ahn'Qiraj is a direct continuation of the ancient war: players gather the fragments of the Scepter, forge the legendary Scepter of the Shifting Sands and strike the gong, admitting the armies into Ahn'Qiraj to slay C'Thun himself.
