Line of Sight (LoS) — why your spell 'won't fire'
Vanilla WoW Classic 1.12 · x5 realm · wowx5.ruLine of sight (LoS) is a clear, unobstructed line between your character and the target. In WoW Classic almost every directed action — a spell, a shot, a heal, applying aggro — requires the target to be "in view". If something is in the way, the game replies "Target not in line of sight".
Line of sight is measured roughly from the chest, not the feet. A small bump or low fence won't break a cast, but a pillar, wall or steep slope will. Check the angle, not just the range.
What blocks line of sight
Any opaque level geometry can block LoS:
- walls, pillars and doors of buildings and dungeons;
- terrain — hills, cliffs, steep slopes and drops;
- large objects — boulders, trees, structures.
Other players and mobs do not block line of sight: you cast through a crowd freely. Only static world geometry matters.
LoS for damage, healing and aggro
Line of sight works the same for every directed effect:
| Action | Result without LoS |
|---|---|
| Damage spell | cast won't start or is cancelled |
| Bow/gun shot | "Target not in line of sight" |
| Healing an ally | the heal won't land |
| Applying threat | the mob gets no aggro and resets |
That's why a healer always stands where they can see the whole group: if the tank rounds a corner, the heal simply won't reach. This ties closely to range and positioning.
LoS pulling: breaking line as a tactic
Breaking line of sight is a powerful tool against casters. Stepping behind a pillar or corner cancels an enemy mage's cast and forces the whole pack to run into melee, where it's easy to crowd-control or stack on the tank. This is called LoS pulling and is common in caster-heavy dungeons.
The same principle protects you: ducking behind a corner at the right moment cancels a boss's dangerous cast or an enemy mage's spell in PvP — related to interrupting, except the map itself is the obstacle.
Line of sight on the WowX5 x5 server
On WowX5 x5 LoS is classic: the same geometry, the same LoS pulls, the same need for healers to keep the group in view. In raids like Molten Core smart use of pillars saves the group's lives.

FAQ
What is line of sight in WoW Classic?
Line of sight (LoS) is a clear, unobstructed line between you and your target. If a wall, pillar or hill is in the way, spells, shots and heals won't land — the game returns 'Target not in line of sight'.
Why can't I heal an ally behind a wall?
Healing is a directed spell just like damage and needs line of sight to the target. If the tank steps around a corner the heal fails, which is why healers position to see the whole group.
How do I use LoS against casters?
Stepping behind a pillar or corner breaks the enemy caster's line of sight — its spell is cancelled and the mob usually runs into melee. This trick (LoS pulling) bunches packs and shuts down dangerous casts.
