The nature of the Light
The Holy Light is a universal spiritual energy, open to anyone who truly believes. It does not destroy the world but sustains and shields it. The teachings of the Light are kept by the Church of the Holy Light, the spiritual foundation of the Alliance and of all who stand against darkness. Unlike arcane magic, the Light demands no inborn gift: one comes to it through compassion, steadfastness and service to others. The stronger the spirit and the purer the intent of the one who calls, the brighter the Light answers.
Wielders of holy magic
The foremost warriors of the Light are the paladins, heirs to the order of the Silver Hand. Their blessings, auras and Exorcism smite evil. The Light is also carried by priests: their Heal, Renew and Power Word: Shield keep the group standing. In the fight against the undead, the Light is served by the order of the Argent Dawn.
Light against darkness
The Light is mortals' chief weapon against the Scourge and the spawn of the Old Gods. A paladin's Exorcism and a priest's holy spells deal increased damage to the undead. That is why the Light is not abstract faith but a practical force on the battlefields of Azeroth.
Holy in Vanilla
In game, holy magic is first of all a school of healing and protection: paladins and priests keep raids and groups alive. Holy damage is used less often, but it is especially effective against the undead. Monsters have almost no holy resistance, so this school is reliable both in PvE and as support in PvP.
