The glancing blow is the most underrated enemy of melee damage in WoW Classic. It quietly eats a large part of your DPS against raid bosses, and you cannot fight it with ordinary hit. Here is the mechanic for WowX5 x5 fighters.
Glancing blows only happen on white auto-attacks and only against targets above your level. Yellow abilities like Mortal Strike never glance.
Why damage is cut
When you strike a target above your level, some auto-attacks land as glancing — with reduced damage. A glancing blow always lands (it cannot be avoided) and never crits. Against a level 63 boss with 300 weapon skill:
- about 40% of white swings become glancing;
- the damage penalty reaches 35% of a normal hit.
How weapon skill and the penalty relate
The share of glancing blows is set by the level difference — hit cannot remove it. But the size of the penalty is softened by weapon skill: each point above the base reduces the damage lost to glancing.
