An interrupt is an ability that cuts an enemy cast mid-way and stops the spell from firing. In WoW Classic interrupts decide fights against casters: a Fireball or a heal stopped in time matters more than another hundred damage. It is a key part of combat mechanics alongside spell effects.

Совет

An interrupt only works on a target that is casting RIGHT NOW. A Pummel pressed into thin air is wasted and goes on cooldown — watch the enemy's cast bar rather than pressing blindly.

How an interrupt works

Every spell in the game has a cast time — a bar that fills over a few seconds. An interrupt strikes that very bar: use it while the enemy is casting and the spell is instantly cut and does not fire, wasting the caster's time and often their mana.

You can only interrupt a target that is casting at that moment. Against a finished cast or an instant ability an interrupt does nothing — it just goes on cooldown for nothing. So timing is everything: watch the enemy's cast bar.

School lockout

The real power of Vanilla interrupts is not only cutting a cast but locking out a school of magic for a few seconds. This is the lockout:

  • Interrupt a Fireball and the fire school is closed, but the enemy can still cast from the arcane or frost school.
  • Interrupt a heal and the holy school is closed, so the healer cannot heal for a few seconds, though shields and damage from other schools remain.

So against a multi-school foe you rotate interrupts: cut one school, then brace for a dangerous cast from another. This is the fine play that separates a veteran from a newcomer.

Interrupt abilities by class

The set of interrupts in WoW Classic is small, and each class has its niche:

AbilityClassNote
PummelWarriorneeds rage and Berserker Stance
KickRoguecheap on energy, + short silence
CounterspellMageranged, locks a school
Earth ShockShamanshuts a cast at range
Bite / Growlhunter petthe beast interrupts the target

The priest, warlock and druid have no direct kick — they rely on silence, fear or control.

Silence and spell pushback

Beyond the kick there are two related mechanics:

  • Silence fully forbids the target from casting for its duration. In Vanilla this is, for example, part of a rogue's Kick or a talented Counterspell. While silenced, the enemy cannot cast at all.
  • Spell pushback — when damage lands on a caster, their cast bar is rolled back and the spell finishes later. Several hits in a row can drag an enemy cast out for a long time, even if they do not cut it entirely.

Together kick, silence and pushback give a rich toolkit against casters, especially in PvP.

Interrupts on the WowX5 x5 server

On WowX5 x5 the interrupt mechanic is classic: the same school lockout, the same timing on the cast bar. In dungeons and raids like Molten Core, an assigned kick rotation on caster mobs saves the group from lethal spells.

FAQ

How does an interrupt work in WoW Classic?

An interrupt cuts an enemy spell while the cast bar is filling. It only fires on a target that is casting at that moment; against a finished cast or an instant ability it just goes on cooldown for nothing.

What is a school lockout?

By interrupting a spell you close its school of magic (fire, frost, holy, etc.) for a few seconds — the enemy cannot cast from it. Other schools stay available, so against a multi-school foe you rotate kicks.

Who has an interrupt in Vanilla?

A direct kick belongs to the warrior (Pummel), rogue (Kick), mage (Counterspell), shaman (Earth Shock) and the hunter pet. The priest, warlock and druid have no kick — they use silence, fear and control.
