Before threat is even counted, a monster must first notice the player. That is the job of the aggro mechanic: every mob has a radius in which it spots prey, and rules by which it enters combat or, conversely, loses its target. Level difference decides whether you walk right up unseen or wake half the camp.

Совет

The higher a monster is above you in level, the wider its aggro radius. You cannot approach a mob 3-4 levels above you as closely as an equal — it notices you from afar and calls its neighbors.

Aggro radius and level difference

Every monster has an aggro radius — the distance at which it notices an approaching player and charges into combat. The base radius is about 20 yards, but it depends heavily on level difference:

Who is higher levelAggro radius
Player far above the mobnear zero — you can walk right past
Equal levelstandard (~20 yards)
Mob above the playerwidens with each level of difference

So 'gray' mobs (far below you) barely react, while a foe 5 levels higher notices from afar. Accounting for this is critical when leveling through dangerous zones.

Social aggression

Many monsters are linked by social aggression: the moment one enters combat, neighbors within a certain radius run to help. This turns a careless pull of one mob into a brawl with three or four.

Humanoids in camps are especially dangerous — centaur, gnolls, kobolds are often 'social'. Experienced players pull a single target to open ground or use crowd control so as not to gather the whole patrol at once.

Stealth detection

A rogue's or feral druid's stealth is not absolute. Mobs have a chance to detect a sneaking player, and it rises the higher the monster's level and the closer the player. Right in front of a high-level guard, stealth breaks almost for certain.

So a stealthy pass by strong elites is always a gamble: keep clear of their vision cone and never walk right up. Stealth classes use this to skip needless fights and slip behind enemy lines.

Losing aggro: leash and evade

A monster will not chase a player forever. Lead it too far from its spawn point and it drops the target, turns and runs home in evade mode — fully restoring health and becoming invulnerable on the way back.

This is both an escape (run past the 'leash') and a common mistake: drag a boss around a corner and it 'evades' and heals up. In raids like Molten Core, knowing the leash boundary saves a pull from resetting.

Aggro on the WowX5 x5 server

On WowX5 x5 the aggro mechanic is classic: the same radii, the same social aggression and evade. Fast leveling on x5 means you often fight mobs below you whose aggro radius is near zero — but do not relax in higher zones where foes are older.

FAQ

What determines aggro radius in WoW Classic?

The main factor is level difference. Against a mob above you the radius widens and it notices from afar; against a much weaker ('gray') mob the radius is near zero and you can walk right up.

What is social aggression of mobs?

It is a link between monsters: when one enters combat, neighbors within a certain radius run to help. Because of it, a careless pull of a single target becomes a fight with a whole group.

Why does a mob run off and heal?

If you lead a monster too far from its spawn point it drops the target and enters evade: it runs home, is invulnerable on the way and fully restores HP. You must not drag a target beyond its zone.
